I'm thinking start with My Computer (right click on that icon) -> Properties -> Device Manager [tab] -> "Sound, video, and game controllers" option. Also look in that list of devices and see if you spot any large yellow question marks...and we'll go from there.

Ok, I have a problem too, and figured I'd post it here.
Months ago I noticed my old desktop wouldn't load up. It'd always take me to the black screen that asked how I wanted to boot it up (Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ Networking, Last Known Good Configuration, etc). Regardless of what I picked, it'd just go back to that black screen every time. So I was given some sort of disc by someone, who said I'd just have to boot from that CD, and repair windows. When I boot from that CD, it eventually asks me which partition I want to install Windows on. I noticed that the main partition (the C: drive) seems to be empty (it says something like 183619mb, 183310mb available). So did the harddrive somehow get wiped out? Also, if I choose to install it on the C: drive, it mentions that it needs to be repaired/reformatted, in which case I imagine it will be completely wiped out, if it already isn't. So I'm just seeking confirmation that everything on that computer is gone. Not that I really care, but there were some useful files that would've been nice to have (mainly various types of media). |

That's basically an empty drive. It sounds like somehow your drive was wiped. It's kind of strange that it's completely blank like that, though, without you knowing about it. Even a damaged disk usually still has all the data on it, albeit usually corrupt. If you have the equipment to do this, remove that hard drive from the computer, then go find another Windows computer. Remove the shroud from this other Windows computer and install the hard drive as a secondary drive on it. There will likely be available ports and power-supply harnesses for another drive. Do this when the power to the computer is off and it is unplugged, of course. Once everything is hooked up, boot up that computer. When Windows is fully loaded (i.e. when you see the desktop and all its startup tasks are completed), it'll tell you that it found new hardware, which will be that hard drive that you just installed. Windows will do this automatically. After it tells you that it's ready to use, you should be able to browse it, meaning you could recover any files that are still there that aren't corrupt. |
