Default Issues in Alphabetizing

I'm curious to hear how people alphabetize or sort their collections when it comes to movies that don't really have a clear sorting location. I like to keep my Blus alphabetized but sometimes it isn't quite clear how to sort them. For example, I keep the 5 Harry Potters, The Mummy, POTC in story, rather than alphabetical, order but I have the 007 movies and Jack Ryan movies simply sorted alphabetically. So what are people doing with Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black? Going by that DVD-only added Chronicles of Riddick header on Pitch Black and sorting it that way? Separating them out?

First I sort by studio. I like to have the studios logos match. Then I sort by Alphabet. For the Bond movies I keep them together and sort by the movies year.

I would imagine that you would put the first Riddick movie then Pitch Black.
Just like the POTC movies.

I do alphabetically, but then with series I do chronologically (So I would do Harry Potter 1, 2, 3, etc.)

I do keep my movies in alphabetical order, but there is one exception.

I have The Dark Knight right next to Batman Begins. Just didn't make sense to separate them to me.

I do it alphabetically for all my movies except for the Harry Potter movies, which I put in chronological order since they all start with the words Harry Potter. Thus, I don't have Dark Knight next to Batman Begins. When I'm looking for a movie in my collection I want to know exactly where it will be.
As for your Riddick movies, I would put them in chronological order since they all start the same way.

I go by alphabetical order except when sequels are involved. Then I keep the related movies together and in chronological order.

I run mine alphabetical with some exceptions.

I have every Batman movie, so they run by age of movie from: The 1966 Original - Batman - Batman Returns - Batman Forever - Batman & Robin - Batman Begins - The Dark Knight

I have all my Disney*Pixar classic movies together because i got custom overs for all of them that are the same (Most have yet to be released): A Bug's Life - Cars - Finding Nemo - The Incredibles - Monster's Inc. - Ratatouille - Toy Story - Toy Story 2

If I were to pick up Chronicles of Riddick, I would most likely put it in front of Pitch Black. I would also put all the bonds together in order of release if I had them all.

Bonds must be sorted by year. What's the point in having Die Another Day next to Dr No? Brosnan doesn't belong next to Connery.
The Dark Knight is filed under "Batman" - but I think that that's part of me working in an entertainment store where the same is done.
Though it's like Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace - do they belong with the other 007 films or separately?

I think once I get enough Disney/Pixar films I'll bunch them together like I have my DVDs.

Otherwise everything is alphabetical (except series).

DVDs and Blu-Rays I'm not too strict on the ordering. However, if you were to take a look at my iTunes library...

I keep them in alphabetical order generally. However, for anything with more than 1 movie in their franchise, I keep the movies in the franchise in chronological order. When there are a significant number of titles in a genre, I break that genre on its own. For some special franchises such as Bond, Star Trek they are also separated out on their own.

I have First Blood and Rambo: First Blood Part II with the Rs, cause Rambo's the word that unites the movies (mostly); my three (so far) James Bond movies are in the Js cause of James Bond, and in chronological order; if I had The Last Man On Earth (can't wait for a Blu-ray release), I'd place it before I Am Legend (both adaptations of the same story) with The Last Man on Earth first.

Funnily enough, in George A. Romero's "Dead" series, I have Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Diary of the Dead, which I would place in the Ds anyway because of "Dead", even if I also had the original (Night of the Living Dead), and in that same alphabetical order as well, because it is also the chronological order!

Ok enought OCD rambling. :P

I may try that sorting by studio idea. I like the look of it in your pic.

Hahaha, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who struggles with how to sort this stuff.

I'm leaning towards sorting the Riddick movies as Chronicles of Riddick then it story order from there.

So do the Bond movies generally get sorted under J for James, B for Bond or 0 for 007? In DVDs I had sorted them under 007, but I'm a bit vexed with how to sort them now when the Blu-Ray set is still incomplete which is why I've just left them alphabetically spread throughout my collection.

Same issue with the Jack Ryan movies, especially because they're only tenuously linked (Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, Sum of All Fears).

Does anyone else sort out TV shows seperately from the movies? I had done that with DVD when I had a ton but I only have a handful of shows now on Blu and just leave them with the movies.

I'd love to try that studio sorting idea but I think it would take FOREVER to actually rearrange my collection.

At first, I used to have them arranged by studio. But now, I've since moved on to organizing them alphabetically, with 2 exceptions:

1. Like Rob J in WNY has stated, I also put The Dark Knight right next to Batman Begins.

2. The Bond Blu-rays that I have in my collection have their own special shelf, arranged by the year the movie came out (i.e., Dr. No in 1962 through to Quantum of Solace in 2008).

Alphabetical then chronilogical. In this case, Pitch Black comes first.

With the Bond movies: I had my DVD's sorted starting with 007. With the Blu-rays, there's no 007 on the spine so I'm sorting those ones under "J" for James Bond 007.
