I'm trying to get some ideas for how to expand in my cooking...what are some dishes you guys like preparing that aren't too complicated to put together? Throw out anything, as it will be good to see a variety of what people like making. If you use any websites that have some good recipes you're welcome to post em too.

I wouldn't say I'm a great cook, but when it comes to guys and cooking, I think I'm in the top tier. Most of what I learned I learned from just watching TV. Shows I really like: Food 911 Actually, that's the only one I really watch. You can find some episodes of it on YouTube. One of the many recipes I stole from that show was some sort of steak with chimichurri sauce. The chimichurri sauce is really good, and I ended up making a huge batch of it, and used the extra as a salad dressing. |

Same here, toe. As far as being a male and cooking is concerned, I like to consider myself top notch, at least in my age group. I could never stomach university Dining Hall food, and could never live off Ramen noodles like fellow college students. I always lived in a place with a full kitchen, and by now, after 4 years of cooking for myself, I've mastered most of my mother's and father's recipes - all sorts of hispanic meals and pastas, too. Fish, chicken, pork, steak, beef...I use everything at my disposal. I'm mean with tilapia and salmon.

Well what are you into? Meat & potatoes so to speak.... light foods... seafood.... ethnic foods... spicy foods? What makes you wanna slap your pappy? I make a world class gumbo.... it's not complicated but it does take a lot of time and patience.

I never tried thai food until a couple years ago, and though I've had a few bad things, most of the time it was really good. I'm not a huge seafood fan, but it's ok. And I don't really like Indian food. But even though I consider myself good at cooking, I have to admit two of my favorite foods are Kraft Mac 'n Cheese and Little Caesar's Crazy Bread (cooked pizza dough drenched in garlic butter, with parmesan cheese on it... incredibly greasy). |

How about italian then? Get some manicotti shells, or even easier to stuff..... the big seashell shaped shells, and make a spinach and cheese filling for some; and a meat and cheese filling for the rest. Looks impressive... but really not all that hard.
Make a nice italian salad to go with it... and I have an awesome secret for that... take your hardier vegetables like your onions, a little garlic, carrots, etc, and mix them in a ziploc bag with some herbs, like oregano and basil, salt and pepper, and enough olive oil or italian dressing to lightly coat, shake and marinate for a couple of hours.. then toss with your greens. It allows the flavors to mingle and tastes so good you really don't need to add dressing to the final salad unless you just want to. Make some toast with roasted garlic.... just take a garlic clove and cut off the root end and make a foil bed to make it stand upright... drizzle olive oil over it... wrap all the way in foil..... and roast at 325 for 15-20 minutes. When it cools a little just squeeze the garlic into a pestal or small bowl... sprinkle a little salt in and mash with a mortar or fork. Then mash in some butter. While I'm at it, I'll mention another one of my favorite foods.
I never tried to actually make it myself, but I think it can't be too hard. A local middle eastern place makes a sandwich called the Chicken Grecian, and I could eat them all day, every day. It's a regular piece of pita bread, with some grilled chicken in it. Add to that some lettuce, tomatoes, onions and feta cheese. To top it all off, there is some sort of magical creamy dressing, which I can't really figure out (though that sounds kind of bad). It's definitely garlic-y, but beyond that, I have no idea. One of these days I might just call them and ask, but I fear that that's like asking KFC for their list of herbs and spices. |
