Default Rumor: Rapture: Square Enix's PS3 Console Exclusive MMO

http://www.gameplayer.com.au/gp_docu...eE3Update.aspx

Quote:
A few days ago we broke the news regarding Square Enix’s E3 plans, which included the announcement of three all new games. At the time of writing we had been requested to not divulge the names or giveaway said titles, but we’ve just received new information about one of those three games that comes with no such restrictions. So here we go…

Contrary to what we were originally told, there will be a Square Enix press conference after all, at 11a.m on the Wednesday of the show. This will be a portal for selected media to learn more about one of Square Enix’s currently unannounced games, which we can reveal is an MMO codenamed Rapture, and set for release on PS3 and PC. The game is expected to be unveiled at the Sony press conference on the Tuesday.

While the PC and Xbox 360 have shared a strong software relationship over the last three years, the PC and PS3 have a more open rapport when it comes to online interactivity between the software and the gamers. It seems bizarre given Microsoft’s networking know-how, but the heavy restrictions it puts in place with the way developers can manipulate and engage their audience through Xbox Live makes it difficult for some games to make the most of their potential. Also worthy of note is the fact that the PS3 is free to play online, and it is more flexible in the headsets, keyboards and mice that can be used with it than the Xbox 360.

A classic precedent for all this is Epic Games’ decision to launch Unreal Tournament III on PS3 and PC well ahead of Xbox 360, claiming that Sony’s console better facilitated what they wanted to achieve in access and distribution of user-created Mods.

All that said and done, MMOs have still struggled to find the success on consoles that they have on PCs: even Square Enix own Final Fantasy XI failed to impress. It should be noted, however, that the company has used the term MMO, not MMORPG, which means it could be something totally unexpected.

the required HDD is what killed FFXI the slim didnt allow hte use of the HDD which meant you could nt play the game which limited its audience as a LOT of people went out and upgraded to the slim when it came out ..

Also you needed to pay a monthly subscription. Thats one of the reasons why I stopped playing it. Another reason was that the leveling system was the opitomy of what is it to grind your way through levels.

well most MMO's have a month subscription .. whihc is understandable they have to pay people to constantly monitor and maintain the game which i think was pretty well handled in FFXI and i thought the gameplay was perfect grinding wasnt an issue when you partied up with people as you were able to fight some monstrous creatures and it was enjoyable .. but like what happened to me my PS2 got busted ( dropped on concrete ) i spent 3 hours going to 12 different stores trying to find a used old system .. and finally found one .. but if i hadnt i would have been done .. i ended up quitting playing though as all my friends started playing too late at night for me ..

Yeah...thats IF you could find a party and all your buddies are on at the same time. If thats not the case then you'll be having an extremely boring time with that game.

Work on FFV13 and FF13 instead of this! Even better, work on KH3!

Online RPG games (if that's what it turns out to be) hold very little interest for me. Adding a monthly subscription would reduce that interest to zero.

It's nice to see more MMOs being announced for consoles but let's see what they come up with

I personally am leaning to DC universe online as many of you may have guessed due to the new combat system they'll be using & doesn't seem as if you will have to endure endless grinding that sucks the joy out of the game or have a hard time going to certain areas in game as you get killed by high level enemies due to being able to fly, run or jump pretty high & scope out your route before hand but you can do that i suppose with most MMOs but just not straight from the off

I think the above reason of the need for a external HDD add on for PS2 was the main reason it bombed but since all PS3s come with one as standard it should not be a problem as such but the gameplay style, story & monthly fee will make or break many peoples interest in this MMO

This may fall into the bizarre "what the deuce?" category, but if it's true, we suppose it will come as good news to MMO fans everywhere. We think...As noted by Examiner.com, the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation magazine confirms that Square-Enix will be porting Final Fantasy XIto the PlayStation 3. It originally released for the PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. Now, we have heard that the veteran RPG publisher might reveal three new titles at E3 this year, and while this doesn't exactly qualify as "new," FFXI for the PS3 might very well be one of the announcements. While we can easily recognize the big push to include online multiplayer in just about every last video game on earth these days, porting something like Final Fantasy XIto the PS3 strikes us as being a bit...well, after the fact, so-to-speak. We've got stuff like MAGand The Agencyheading our way, so how many people are really going to leap online to take a shot at an old MMO? Then again, we admit to not being very familiar with the whole MMO culture so perhaps we haven't the slightest idea what we're talking about, and that's a distinct possibility. But let's just say this isn't the announcement we want from Square-Enix at E3; we want something bad-ass, like Kingdom Hearts III.But either way, we'll bring you the news as it happens. It kinda what we do.
this is from PSExtreme, make what you will of it, thought it may be linked to this but there goes the fun of 'new' MMO if true & it's just a port of FFXI

I mentioned this as a musing in the prediction thread, but I'm begining to think I was on to something - I think part of Sony's "biggest E3 in 10 years" thing is going to be that this is the "year" of Console MMOs.

If I had to guess that and PS3-PSP interactivity are going to be two of the bigger pillars that everything hangs on.....

That pretty much contradicts X-top's info which says Rapture is a PC/PS3 only game. I can't imagine that FFXI (which was already on PC) would be considered a new PC/PS3 game that way. Either one of the site's facts are off or FFXI is in addition to Rapture.

i came across it as an announcement for a PS3 MMO that maybe is linked but your right, it would contradict so i hope it's not true but you know how companies sometimes like to port really old games & call em 'new' but hope this isn't the same, after all, it hasn't been released on PS3 so could be 'new' as in the first release on this platform but again would still have some contradiction to the new PC/PS3 MMO idea

Just hope it is another MMO in addition to this new one were hoping to make an appearance but looking forward to much more info on DC universe online & The Agency as well as Free Realms & hopefully solid release date of month or at least the season

If it were PS3 only, I'd agree - you could make a "director's cut/enhanced version" and call it a new game. The PC part is what caught my eye. It would be very hard to can even a substantially enhanced copy of the game on PC "new".

I'm assuming the FFXI rumor is in addition to, not one of the 3. Though I can't see that being a big seller/deal unless SE's main motivation is to potentially transition PS2 players to the PS3 and stabilze subscriptions or draw back in lost players who have moved to PS3.

If only it didn't say SE, then this would be the Bioshock MMO annoouncement.

Good name, hopefully good game. Monthly Fee will kill it though on PS3.

So 6 years from now, we will have an exclusive from SE, but a year before release it will go multiplatform.

I hope that the PS3 and PC community for this game will be joined. My bet is that the PS3 version will have keyboard/mouse support too!
