Question Playing PAL DVD's on a Japanese PS3

I have a Japanese PS3 and my DVD's consist of only Region 2 discs. So far so good, considering the region for DVD's of the Japanese PS3 is also region 2. However, my Japanese discs work (they are NTSC) but my European ones don't (PAL). Is there any way to work around this? I'd like to use my PS3 to upscale all my DVD's.

The system can tell the difference between NTSC and PAL. When I lived in Germany, I bought the German DVD for Takeshi Miike's Audition and the German DVD is R0 and I put it in my US PS2 and it told me something like "WRONG TV SYSTEM". It can tell the difference.

I assume the Japanese PS3 plays both PAL and NTSC, but does your TV accept a 50hz video signal?

Japanese PS3's do not play PAL in any shape or form. Neither do USA PS3's. They just don't have software for it.

If you buy a R3 Hong Kong PS3 it will have PAL playback enabled, but you can't use your R2 discs because of region locking.

You could copy your DVD's and put them on DVD'R's and play them that way on a R3 PS3.

I believe DIVX is supported at 50hz, there is an option in the system settings. However, it won't affect DVD playback which still refuses to play.

Yeah, it make no sense. Previously Japan was on par with europe in regards to region code, and not the US. Now they are with the US and not Europe. Thus Japanese PS3 that can play US blu-rays, but not US DVDs, and neither european DVDs.

There's no such thing as PAL/NTSC in blu ray since blu ray is HD. I'd suggest getting a region free dvd player.

I just accidentally bought a Hong Kong Blu-ray (1080i/50) that for some reason or another is PAL. When I put it into the PS3 (US Version), it does not play. The info on the Blu-ray package says "plays on PS3 or PAL enabled Blu-ray player". On the PS3 menu screen, a picture of the content shows up, yet it cannot play. I am wondering whether my Sony XBR4 can be set to 50Hz.

I am bummed, because thus far, Blu-ray movies of Hong Kong movies have all been NTSC, until I encountered this Blu-ray (it is a music concert, so I don't think they will ever import this elsewhere).

There are PAL Blurays actually. Not common, but I have 2 1080i50 movies. Some non US imports may be 1080p24 but have 1080i50 menu's also.

Blu-ray supports standard definition content too, which can be the resolution of NTSC (ie. 480 lines at 60hz) or the resolution of PAL (576 lines at 50hz). This SD content is often used for Bonus content on Blu-ray discs, with the 50hz content sometimes used on European based discs. Australian discs might use it too.

Blu-ray also supports HD content at both 60hz and 50hz, as well as 24p. There are Blu-ray discs available which use these formats.

To the OP - you could ask in Penton's Insider thread since there are some similar questions there about making players play back 50hz content.

Like you, despite I live in Europe, I have a Japanese PS3 too.
I can't play any PAL DVD.
The solution: 60 euros Philips DVD player (HDMI,multiregion) and it plays everything on DVD.
My problem is with BD's Region B but I'm naive and still keeping faith in Sony updates
