Default Bunch of questions

Hi everyone, I'm new here.
I pretty much don't know anything about blu-ray or HD Dvd or any of that, all I know is, I love collecting dvds.

I'm thinking about getting a blu-ray player so I thought I'd come here and ask you guys for your advice.

first of all, which player is the best? I was thinking about getting the Sony player since it looks so pretty lol but I have no idea if it's the best one to get.

second of all, do regular dvds play on the blu-ray player or do I have to keep my old dvd player?

And my final question is, what is the difference between regular dvds, HD dvds, and blu-ray dvds? I'm sure the quality of blu-ray is the best, but are there anymore differences? And is the quality difference between HD dvds and blu-rays that big?

I would really appreciate an answer to any of these questions and thanks in advance.

Hello, and welcome to our little forum.

1. I would reccomend a PS3. It has more capabilitys than a standalone player. (Wireless Internet, hard disk, memory card...ect)

2. Regular DVDs will play in a Blu-ray player, and will also be upconverted so they look high definition, so you will have no use for a DVD player.

3.

DVD- 4.7 GB
HD DVD- 30 GB
Blu-ray Disc- 50 GB
The difference between Blu-ray and HD DVD is obvious, considerably.

Thank you so much Aaron. Just a couple more questions

1) Does the PS3 play blu-ray movies in the same quality the standalone player does? if there are any differences in the way they play can you please tell me?

2) I assume that since the blu-ray player plays regular DVDs then it plays HD DVDs too, correct?

Thank you so much for the answers and the welcome

Yes, the PS3 plays the same quality as a standalone. The PS3 uses HDMI V. 1.3, which is better than some standalones, and it has an extremely powerful processor. It is the cheapest Blu-ray player, and the most advanced.

An HD DVD will not play in a DVD player. A DVD player does not have the proper laser to read the disc.

Anything else I can help you with?

Oh too bad, I was hoping that one device will play all three.
but it doesn't matter since the blu-ray plays the regular dvds in better quality so I guess I don't really need to get an HD DVD player.

my tv is the Sony Bravia KLV-46X200

Thank you so much you have been a great help!
my birthday is coming up in a couple of months so I know what I'll be asking for

This LG player plays all 3 formats. But I highly suggest not getting one.

I'll be getting the PS3 like you suggested. It seems like the best choice and it looks great too.
I know it's stupid, but the way a device looks is very important to me. I currently have a sony dvd recorder and I hate the way it looks.

btw, are there any blu-ray recorders released yet?

hopefully by the time it gets released, I'll be able to figure it out lol.

I can't thank you enough for all the help now I'm really excited about getting the PS3! I don't think I'll wait for my Bday, I'll just get it myself lol.

Back when it was first released, I chose the Wii over it, but Wii got old really fast.

Yes, the Wii does get old fast. It was fun for 2 weeks, then I started wondering why I wasted 250$ on somthing useless.

-Your welcome!

I would've regretted getting it, only it looks good displayed so it's cool lol. I think we all got too excited since it had a new way of playing games. It is a great device but I haven't played video games in years and I think that's why I'm not into it now.

I want to sell mine, but my 7 year old brother loves it. I guess I spent 250$ on him because I haven't played it in 2 weeks. What really tics me off it that my iPod broke 2 days after buying the Wii. I would have rather had an shiny new iPod.

JiJi, just be aware that as with DVDs, Blu-rays have regions, so just to let you know that when you buy a player it will be set on the region you live, so you'll be able to play discs encoded to your region, and disc that are all-region.

Thread about region encodings. There may be other threads too.

Also be aware of the sound output capabilities of the player you buy and the audio/receiver you have (stuff like analog/coaxialSPDIF/toslink optical/HDMI 1.0-1.3 DTS, and what PCM sampling rates/channels (48-192kHz and 2/5.1/7.1)) can you get.

The 1080p picture is amazing as well wow i hope you enjoy it i would get both POTC for your 1st bluray movies!

I own a Sony BD-S1, Samsung BD-P1200, and a PS3 (these are all part of different A/V systems). I must say that I like all three players. My current favorite is probably the BD-P1200. The PS3 is really neat in that it is so flexible, but it does have a few disadvantages as well: it draws significantly more power than the others, runs pretty hot, and the fan is quite audible after it's been on for awhile. Just some things to consider.
