Oh too bad, I was hoping that one device will play all three.
but it doesn't matter since the blu-ray plays the regular dvds in better quality so I guess I don't really need to get an HD DVD player.

my tv is the Sony Bravia KLV-46X200

Thank you so much you have been a great help!
my birthday is coming up in a couple of months so I know what I'll be asking for

This LG player plays all 3 formats. But I highly suggest not getting one.

I'll be getting the PS3 like you suggested. It seems like the best choice and it looks great too.
I know it's stupid, but the way a device looks is very important to me. I currently have a sony dvd recorder and I hate the way it looks.

btw, are there any blu-ray recorders released yet?

hopefully by the time it gets released, I'll be able to figure it out lol.

I can't thank you enough for all the help now I'm really excited about getting the PS3! I don't think I'll wait for my Bday, I'll just get it myself lol.

Back when it was first released, I chose the Wii over it, but Wii got old really fast.

JiJi, just be aware that as with DVDs, Blu-rays have regions, so just to let you know that when you buy a player it will be set on the region you live, so you'll be able to play discs encoded to your region, and disc that are all-region.

Thread about region encodings. There may be other threads too.

Also be aware of the sound output capabilities of the player you buy and the audio/receiver you have (stuff like analog/coaxialSPDIF/toslink optical/HDMI 1.0-1.3 DTS, and what PCM sampling rates/channels (48-192kHz and 2/5.1/7.1)) can you get.

also jiji there will only be one format winner between blu-ray and HD DVD and since bluray has more studio support then hd dvd the hd dvd will slowly die! lol bluray is the way of the future! The 1080p picture is amazing as well wow i hope you enjoy it i would get both POTC for your 1st bluray movies!

I own a Sony BD-S1, Samsung BD-P1200, and a PS3 (these are all part of different A/V systems). I must say that I like all three players. My current favorite is probably the BD-P1200. The PS3 is really neat in that it is so flexible, but it does have a few disadvantages as well: it draws significantly more power than the others, runs pretty hot, and the fan is quite audible after it's been on for awhile. Just some things to consider.

I don't know how much power it draws since I've never measured it, but I've never had any problems with my PS3's fan being noisy after it's been on for awhile. As a matter of fact, once firmware version 1.60 came out I started running "folding" 24/7 except when we're watching blu-ray movies and it's never been overly hot or had the fan kick up in volume. Perhaps it's the way I have the PS3 positioned? I stand it "vertically" on the cheap "stand" that has the blue light and in the open (i.e., not in an enclosed area).

The only thing I understood from this post is the part about the region lol. I've never had a problem with regions before with any of my dvd players. I think the ones they sell here play all regions because I buy dvds everywhere I go. From here, other Arab countries, Europe, the U.S. and they all play just fine so I guess it'll be the same with the blu-ray player or the PS3, but thanks for bringing that to my attention, I'll ask about that before I buy a player.

I asked about PS3 and I was told that the silver one hasn't been released and that the only one available is the black one. Now I'm not sure about getting it simply because it wouldn't look good lol. All my players are silver except for the Wii, that one is white, but it still looks good. A black PS3 would look really bad.

Does anyone know when the silver one will be released? if it'll take long then I guess I'll just get the standalone player.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my questions. You guys were a great help.

No dates on the silver or any other colors. If you are so inclined, you can take it apart, take the plastics to a car paintjob shop and paint it silver, then assemble it back. It's been done before.

Read how it's made here.
