USA SUSPICION (1941) Alfred Hitchcock - coming from Warner Archive!

Quote:
BD 50

Mono
DTS-HD Master Audio English
Dolby Digital Francais & Espanol
Subtitles: English SDH, Francais & Espanol
Special Features (in SD):
"Before the Fact: Suspicious Hitchcock" making of documentary
Theatrical Trailer
Well-to-do wallflower Lina McLaidlaw is in love, perhaps in danger. She suspects that Johnnie Aysgarth, the playboy who swept into her life and married her, is a murderer - and that she is his next intended victim.

Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion shyly combines romance, mystery and atmospheric flourishes (like an eerie, glowing glass of milk, an effect achieved with a light bulb inside in glass). Joan Fontaine plays vulnerable, nerve-wracked Lina, following her acclaimed work in Hitchcock's Rebecca with a striking performance that won the Academy Award and New York Film Critics Award as 1941' Best Actress. Playing against type, Cary Grant makes Johnnie an imposing charmer, wastrel and cad. But also a killer? Like the glass that may or may not contain poison, Johnnie's words and deeds may or may not be laced with menace.

I hardly know what to ask for next now.

To Have and Have Not? The Asphalt Jungle? Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

All of them???

Thank god. Now I can tire of reading whining for some other title in the WAC thread - not that I'm not happy

Excellent news. Hopefully that means the other two Hitch Archive blu-ray's have been selling well. Mr. and Mrs. Smith hopefully will be next.

These are all scheduled already so it's not reflective of sales, though I do think those are doing okay.

Yes! I just watched the Warner Archive Blu-ray of I Confess earlier today, and was wondering about what the next Hitchcock title would be.

Excellent!
Hope STAGE FRIGHT is next, it's one of my favorite Hitchcocks, vastly underrated.

The first 95 minutes of SUSPICION are flawless, among Hitchcock's best films, it's just a tragedy that he was apparently forced to radically overhaul the intended ending. The way he describes it in the Truffaut interview book, the studio forced him to shoot the existing final scene where
[Show spoiler]Joan Fontaine learns she has been completely wrong about Cary Grant and that he's totally innocent. Grant was meant to be guilty, the exceedingly silly and implausible twist of his innocence was not meant be there. Fontaine was meant to knowingly drink the poison, because she was unable to turn him in and bear living without him. However she would have written a secret letter informing the authorities and would give the sealed envelope to him just before drinking the milk, innocently asking him to mail it. The final scene was meant to be him cheerfully walking down the street, whistling, and dropping it in a mailbox, blissfully ignorant. That ending would have been as iconic as the ending of VERTIGO.
As it is, it's 9/10 of a masterpiece, to me.

Great news. I hope people didn't order that Japanese import. The PQ looked mediocre.

Yet another Warner Archive release I'll be pre-ordering. That'll be the 5th one this year already.
