3×2, a new conversation between scholars Dave Johnson and Rob Stone about Linklater’s work
Linklater // On Cinema & Time, a video essay by filmmaker :: kogonada
PLUS: An essay on the trilogy by critic Dennis Lim
Quote:
The cornerstone of the career-long exploration of cinematic time by director Richard Linklater, this celebrated three-part romance captures a relationship as it begins, begins again, deepens, strains, and settles over the course of almost two decades. Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twentysomethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke, who cowrote two of the films, imbue their characters with a sense of raw, lived-in experience, and as they age on-screen along with them. Attuned to the sweeping grandeur of time’s passage as well as the evanescence of individual moments, the Before films chart the progress of romantic destiny as it navigates the vicissitudes of ordinary life.

UPDATE: Criterion producers have confirmed at the SCMS conference in Montreal that Before trilogy will be released sometime in 2016!

When asked about when Before Sunrise is going to be released on blu-ray, Ethan Hawke said it will be soon, and something along the lines that Criterion is working on releasing the whole trilogy on blu-ray.

I mean, yes, of course Criterion wants the rights to this? It doesn't mean they're actually getting them. Not news.

Not surprising. It was heavily suggested at by the Criterion New Year's sketch.

The Before movies have been rumored for quite a few years now. If it finally pans out, I will purchase the set day one.

Well, the 2 suns and moon could be the Before trilogy, or the Dardenne's "Two Days One Night" (which seemed most likely) or Moonrise Kingdom.

The fact that Hawke says the are "trying" to get the rights doesn't mean they did, or that it's coming soon, unless he just has bad information. I hope it happens though.

The moon is for sure for Moonrise Kingdom, but the suns being on polar opposites (i.e. East and West) to me signifies sunrise and sunset

I'm pretty sure it was for all three actually: the Before Sunrise Trilogy, Two Days, One Night, and Moonrise Kingdom.

It wouldn't be the first time several titles were associated this way via Criterion.

Why wouldn't Criterion be able to get them, do certain companies refuse to work with Criterion? Its not like these are best seller films.

The Before Sunrise/Sunset films are released by Warner, and they're tough when it comes to sub-licensing their films, but they have worked with Criterion before, and it was confirmed late last year that there will be more Warner titles coming out by Criterion this year. Before Midnight is a Sony release, and they have a much stronger licensing relationship with them. Overall, I don't think there will be any issues with Criterion securing these (I'm sure the New Years clue means they already have).

I still believe that's essentially untrue. The one exception was Badlands, and that still seems like a case where Edward R. Pressman owned enough of the film to sway their hand.

It probably doesn't make much difference but I look at 2015 as the year they're actually beginning to work together.
