when it comes to picture modes there should only be one and that settings has no off switch to
auto contrast
auto color
auto brightness
auto black levels

That looks like a TV that I wouldn't purchase. Based on default settings, I would like to adjust anything and everything to get it calibrated for my environment.

what if the hdtv adjusted to surroundings?
wouldn't it be simpler then adjusting all the time

It does but I wouldnt want a TV devoid of tweaking capabilities...its all in the eyes of the beholder!
