Green Lasers: The Next Innovation in Chip-Based Beams

I happened to finally get around to reading this article in the April issue of Scientific American.

Co-author Shuji Nakamura is professor in the materials department and director of the Solid-State Lighting and Energy Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara. But, Nakamura-san was a scientist at Nicchia before that and is the father of the blue laser used in Blu-ray players.

The article mentions Blu-ray and Playstation 3 several times, and talks about the difficulties Nicchia, Sony and others had getting good yields from blue laser production.

It a deep tech piece on the making of these semi-conductor lasers.
