Has there been any software upgrade to the PS3 or any other players to allow for playback of Blu-ray discs with any region code, making the player region free?

The PS3 can not be made region-free for dvd or Blu-ray.

A firmware update can do it but SCE is not going to make that firmware.

If it's up to CE companies, DVD and BD would be region free. But the movie studios have the last say.
