I realize that the idea of THX picture mode is to emulate a calibrated picture, but my question is how important it is.
Obviously I want to get as much as I can, for as little $ as I can. With this in mind I was wondering if the 50" S1 (w/ Bestbuy calibration) would be equal to the 50" G10 (on THX mode) Or should I estimate the calibration fee into the price of the G10 as well? Also, I know everyone hates on Bestbuy calibration, but I've been informed that they are ISF certified, and unfortunately I've looked online, but been unable to find any pro. calibrators in my area. |

All tvs need to be calibrated to their environment. When you say calibration I am assuming you are speaking of ISF calibration, and not just adjusting the parameters on the basic menus.
Thx (as I understand it) has been tuned closer to ISF preference, but still needs to be locally calibrated. I dont know if it would still need to be ISF calibrated, I would guess probably yes. This is only from what i have read here and elsewhere, and I am no expert and do not claim to be. |

Hello
This is an excellent explanation; I would only add that while a professional in house calibration is what we all should have and appreciate, for so many reasons, personal subjective preferences prevail for many, leaving calibration un-appreciated. Properly professionally calibrated displays, should be what we all view, especially with proper education as to what is going on, detailing options for consistent quality viewing. However, given pervasive mis-information, the result of limited reliable information, it's unlikely that many will appreciate calibrated displays. Thank You Quote:

The G10 will always be a better TV than the S1, it is using a better upscaler in my understanding, so anything other than Blu will look better on it than on the S1... and according to the HD Guru review, the G10's THX mode is fairly accurate but still not as accurate as an ISF calibration (but the difference in color accuracy might be too little for you to notice too)

Setting up a DirecTV reciever or upconverting dvd player to output at 1080i means the images on the screen will be scaled to 1080i via the reciever/player and that image will be transmitted to the TV. The device will scale the image, not the TV. Now, the set will have to upscale from 1080i to its native 1080p, but the result is going to be very difficult to discern(quality wise). |
