Default Sony Digital Cameras with "Full HD 1080" Sticker

I was at Best Buy last weekend looking at digital cameras when I noticed the new Sony cameras with a "Full HD 1080" sticker. Does that just mean they can take a picture that is 1920x1080 pixels? I thought most 5-8 MP cameras can already take pictures in excess of 2000 pixels? Is it just a marketing gimic?

I think that means their video recording capability is now 1080.

EDIT: scratch that. My latest B&H catalog still lists 640x480 for video.

Here we go:

HD Output1

Thanks to Sony, your photo album can go high-def -- with direct HD output1 to your HDTV screen, so you can view DSC-W200 still photos in spectacular high definition clarity and detail. Your life never looked so exciting!

HD Slide Show with Music

It’s the high-definition viewing experience that makes photos come alive on HDTV screens, accompanied by your choice of visual effects and any of four preset musical selections stored in memory or your favorite MP3 tunes downloaded from PC to your camera for use as background music.

from SonyStyle for the W200

Sony's HD camcorders all record video in 1080i HD. The sticker says "Full HD 1080i". The created video files are actually like 1440 x 1080 ( or something like that).

as most of you know, 1920x1080 is the equivelant of about 2.0 megapixels.
So don't be fooled by that.

What the sony cameras are allowing is output of HD resolution of your stills via an optional $39.99 component cable Y-PB-PR. most cameras come with a composite cable, which can't pass HD. You can also stream music and do cool slideshow features with these cameras.

It was a pointless feature for me, because I can already do this through my ps3. So I opted not to buy the accessory, but it's a cool feature if you don't have such a device already.

ps,
The video is still 640x480. They aren't giving HD video in a $250-$400 camera, not yet anyways..lol

Yeah I was looking at that one last saturday and the screen looks amazing and had a $400 price tag on it and only took 8MP, so I paid $300 and got the N2 which is 10.1MP with a touch screen, very nice camera

Since I have a PS3 I would just pop the mem card out and put it in the pS3 card reader and slide show and stuff that way. Thanks for the clarification.
