Default Minority Report Audio

Anyone notice when you pause Minority Report and restart the sound pops really bad? This is the only blu-ray I have that does this. I have latest firmware for PS3. Audio is set correctly on receiver and PS3. I'm getting DTS-HD. Just wondering....

YES! Mine does it too. This is the only the second Blu Ray that does this (Dark City being the other).

I've been told that a possible firmware update may be needed for my receiver. Considering I'd have to ship it back to Sony, it's just not worth the hassle to me.

I watched MR last night. If you just mute your receiver before you hit 'play' again, or before/after chapter skips, it will not pop.

Same problem here. I've reported the issue to Classe and Oppo and of course, it's neither's fault.

I believe this is called the "DTS Bomb".

I had a similar thing happen when I watched Battlestar Galactica. I did some searching around the Internet and found out a lot of people had a similar issue with a whole bunch of different Blu-Rays. It didn't matter what player or reciever was being used either. Some people had it and some people didn't.

The only solution I've been able to discover is to have the player decode the DTS-HD to PCM. This way the DTS signal doesn't mess with your reciever. Since doing this Battlestar hasn't given me any shocks.

everyone who has the ability to should have their receiver's DSP firmware updated. it does sound like the DTS-BOMB, i had it when i had the 805 receiver but got the update from onkyo and that solved my issue. other brands also had the BOMB and either their makers created a firmware update or didn't; i only know about Onkyo. i got the effects of it while jumping to the next chapter in the Golden Compass, it's scary if your volume is turned up!

some players have a setting for PCM but it means downcovert to 2 channel PCM so the term that is probably better used here is LPCM or have the player do the decoding onboard (there should be a setting for bitstreaming audio via HDMI or LPCM onboard decoding of lossless audio via HDMI or Analog) and it's changed and sent out as an LPCM stream (multichannel) to the receiver either via HDMI or analog then yes, what you said is true, there won't be any DTS-BOMB issue. the only folks this will be a problem for are the folks who want to see their vanity codec light on their receivers light up with DTS-HD-MA, instead they will see something to the effect of MULTICHANNEL LPCM, but, it will still be lossless so you won't be missing anything audio wise.

best of luck, keep us posted.

that's what i did last year and updated my firmware on the 805 and it worked with no problems after that. you may need to use a different player to do the flashing from as some players will not play the disc properly. it will tell you about this with the literature that comes with the disc. i couldn't get my oppo or my toshiba hd-dvd player to work i had an older insignia blu ray player (that i gave my kid) and that worked. so don't think theres something wrong with the disc if it won't do anything when connected, it's either a setting on your player or it's the player period. that's the only downside of this. the requirements of the disc and what the receiver needs to see are picky!

keep us posted to let us know after you get it and if you were sucessful with updating the firmware!

I just e-mailed Sony support about a firmware update. Hopefully I'll receive some kind of educated response. It would be nice if they could simply send me a disc to run for the update. Naturally, there are no updates posted on their site.

if you are using the PS3 fat then you will have no problems because the PS3 fat cannot bitstream HD codecs via HDMI it can only decode them onboard and stream the decoded audio as an LPCM so yes, you would have no problems witht he PS3 fat.
the PS3 slim can bitstream HD codecs via HDMI out to a receiver to do the decoding there this is where the DTS-BOMB becomes an issue with receivers that haven't had their DSP firmware updated.

remember, either of the above methods will give you HD audio, both are decoded, one at the player and one at the receiver but both giving HD, lossless audio!

you need to state which PS3 you have (i suspect it's fat since you said it's 60gb, slim start at 120gb if my memory serves me correctly)

If you can't get a firmware update for it, then simply do the decoding onboard the PS3 slim and send it out as an LPCM and you'll be problem free and still have your HD lossless audio!

Well, Sony just replied to my e-mail. Again, this problem is only with Minority Report and Dark City.

"Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm sorry that there is a loud popping sound while playing the Blu-ray discs with a DTS soundtrack, when the disc is pause/resume play and/or skip to the next chapter. Based on the information you've provided, I suggest that you reset the Receiver, and check the operation. Please refer to page # 36 in the User Guide of the Receiver, for the information to reset it. Also, there is no Firmware update available for your Receiver."
