My friend just bought a 52" Sony KDL-52s5100 1080p LCD. When we were watching it, we noticed some noise in the picture during playback of Blu-ray and digital cable. His BD player (Sony S360) is hooked up via HDMI and his digital cable is hooked up via component cables. It was more more noticable when watching HD cable, but it was slightly noticeable on the more bright scenes on BD. For example the very well lit scenes in Celine Dion's live in Vegas show the noise was perceptible. I thought that maybe the picture was turned up too high, so I changed it to cinema mode where the picture setting (backlight) went down to 50. It improved it a little, but was still there. Is this just due to messed up settings or did he get a defective unit? Can someone with a Sony LCD chime in?

I would try adjusting the nose reduction features on the tv before he takes it back. I had a chance to get this tv, the 52inch, but was told to pass on it because its the S series from Sony which is, from what I understand, their entery level tv and dont have the same quality as the V series or the W series. I have seen a few of them at Best Buy, and Sears and they did look good to my eye and they have positive reviews on Best Buy.com but I passed. That being said if the noise reduction features dont improve things then he may want to take it back and get the V or W series. I am picking up another V4100 next week. ![]() |

9 times out of 10 it is the NR , but there are issues regarding that model. I don't recall them off the top of my head, but they have to do with PQ. See what Sony has to say...? Some Tv & BDs just have more then others. Try a BD that YOU know is "Perfect", then see what the deal is.

Yes, we tried out the Dark Knight, Journey to the Center of the earth and National Treasure. I also wanted them to see some "live" looking video, thus the Celine Dion BD.
As far as the sharpness comment, that is a good thought. I'll have to suggest that to them as well. |

If all else fails tell your freind to return it for the V5100 series or the V4100 series. |
