So I picked one up today... I am thoroughly impressed with this TV after only a few hours with it! I tried the 48Hz mode and wasn't as bothered by the flicker as most people seem to be... but to me it seemed like film flicker (caused by the gaps between frames on film) and after trying it on and off, I chose to leave it off.

But I guess I should get some "break in" pictures put on an SD card and run it tonight

Question about the break-in images... should the settings be low for them too? i kinda thought higher settings might be good since you're gonna heat up the phosphors more, which should speed up the phosphor "hardening"

No, you're right, the settings while running the break-in slides should be higher. Check out this AVS thread, there's tons of info about it. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1128487

thanks for the link!

I feel like a bit of a nutjob running this break-in thing considering at work we run about 50% plasmas, and we just take em outta the box and put em on display, 1 or 2 usually running blu-ray with black bars, and I have never seen burn-in or even bad IR

To me the "break-in" is not a bad idea. Uneven phosphor wear is my main concern not Burn-in or temporary IR. Uneven wear can be noticeable when watching full screen content and you'll notice parts of the screen are darker then others. Of course while it's playing content with blackbars you will not be able to spot it as easy if at all.

the only thing that bugs me about the break in period is that its gonna drive my electricity bill through the roof this month! its bad enough that I have the HT in the basement that we're using most of the time my roommate and i are home!

well i checked the service menu... and factoring in that i watched a 2 hour movie and played some NBA 2K9, i have about 20 hours of the break-in run... and i just watched transformers and immediately put the TV to a white screen, then a black screen, after the movie to look for IR or anything out of the ordinary (from the black bars and whatnot) and it was fine.

one thing I just noticed this morning when watching some movie trailers, is that on the screen where there is an absolute black (like black bars) there seems to be a green "glitter" effect, but when there is shadows that are ALMOST absolute black, they are just plain black.

to explain further: the "glitter" looks like the green in the pixels is flashing on and off rapidly... i can not see it from regular viewing distance, but standing up close it is noticeable... should I exchange the TV or will this go away as the phosphors wear in?

nevermind! apparently the green sparkles are caused by settings being too high or something cause I ran the DVE disc and after i adjusted all my settings I havnt seen any sparkling!

Since when do the G-series have a 48Hz mode?

I've read the V/Z-series will have 96Hz for 24p 4:4, but nothing like that in the G/S-series. From Panasonic's site:

http://panasonic.net/avc/viera/us/product/g_plasma.html

What am I missing?

Yeah, it may have just been a last minute thing for them to put 24p 48hrz on there but allstar is right the G10's have 48hrz 24p mode, i own the 50G10.

Running a plasma with that break-in DVD won't use even 1/100th of the electricity as a washer, dryer, oven, fridge, etc. You're looking at roughly $10/month to own a plasma versus not having a TV.

Most people that seem "bothered" by the 48Hz flicker don't even own a set. If you want it to be substantially noticable you have to look about 3ft off to the side of the TV anyway, then you can really notice it...simply because the eye can pick up 48Hz refresh rate, it's not that fast. Of course you can't watch TV if you're not looking at the TV, so I still don't understand how some people describe it as unwatchable.

Forum member BrahmaBull has a 42"G10 and I've watched a bunch of different Blu-ray's at his house and never deemed it unwatchable when looking at the screen. Occasionally with high contrast scenes it's more noticeable than other times, but never unwatchable.
