Default Rca D52w17b

Hi. My in-laws have an RCA D52W17B. This is a 52 inch HDTV. I think it is rear projection, but I am not sure. In the last few days the color has been off, but nobody has messed with the settings. I came over and played with the picture settings, but I cannot correct the problem. The exact problem is the picture has a yellow tint.
Does anybody have an idea on what might be wrong and how I can get if repaired for them?

once in a while i have to mess with the convergence settings so that the colors are aligned.

edit: is the entire picture yellowish or is there a yellow shadow?

I was a tv repair guy for a little over a year.

Those RCAs were notorious for having tube problems.

If its not that it could be the convergence ICs. I also saw the drivers on the kinesocket boards go bad. Those are the boards that plug into the bottom of the individual picture tubes.

Good luck

The entire picture is yellowish, and it seems to throw all the colors off a bit.
I checked all 3 convergence settings and everything seems fine with those.

I am very unfamiliar with this type of TV. I think I could replace a lamp in an LCD TV, but this is new territory for me.
Since you used to repair TVs, maybe you can answer this: What is the estimated cost for each of the repairs you mentioned?

I use to have an RCA D52W23, and as mentioned they have issues.

Personally, I would not even try to fix your parents tv. This will give them a excuse/reason to buy a new LCD or Plasma.

I agree ... getting a new TV is the best idea, I just don't think the in-laws will go for that, yet.
I may take it to a local repair shop here in town that gives free estimates just to see what the deal is. I'll tell the in-laws my opinion is that if it is under $250 to get it repaired and if it is over $250 then lets go TV shopping.

Well depends on if you can get a tube. From say ebay you can get a used one say 100 dollar range. If you get a used one there is no guarantee that it will not fail again in the same way. A new one from RCA probably like 300 bucks.

Tubes are a pain to change. If you have never changed a picture tube its not the easiest thing in the world.

Not to mention that you will need to get the tube yokes aligned properly again so you can auto converge the tv again. Its not difficult just one of the things you need to watch out for. You may also have to set the screen and focus for the tube as well.

Its been a little while but i believe i took the whole front of the tv off, including the front screens. That made it a lot easier to get at everything.

I will tell you this, i would not buy another RCA. The older tube tvs seemed to last forever. Like 20 years. When tvs switched to HD, RCA quality went way down. We saw alot of problems with RCA's not only rear projection but other HD types as well.
