Default Was told Blu-ray is not worth it...

Complete novice when it comes to Blu Ray technology...

A co-worker of mine told me if you don't have at least a 61" LCD or Plasma, I really won't see the difference from a regular DVD player or a Blu Ray.

Is this true?

I have a 46" Sharp LCD.

Also, he said the type of HDMI cable really matters, is that also true?

First of all, wow. Second of all, DVD is 480i, period. So it actually looks worse the more you blow it up. Third of all, no. HDMI cables are all pretty much the same. If your co-worker thinks you need a 61" TV just to appreciate HD, then your co-worker is beyond saving.

Was told wrong.

"A co-worker of mine told me if you don't have at least a 61" LCD or Plasma, I really won't see the difference from a regular DVD player or a Blu Ray.

Is this true?"

No. Depending on viewing distance and TV resolution, differences between BR and upscaled DVD show up on displays around 32" and over. We won't even start on the audio differences, which to me is bigger than the video upgrade.

"Also, he said the type of HDMI cable really matters, is that also true?"

This is correct. If your HDMI cable doesn't have connectors on both ends it won't work. Under 25 feet if it was made in the last couple of years and meets current specs then it won't matter if you pay $3 or $300.

No its not true. You will see a diffrence even on a 26" tv. Also the type of hdmi does NOT matter, you will get the same pq quality no matter if you get a $60 one or a $2 one. By the way thanks for researching more on blu ray, there are alot of false information out there but one thing is certain, you will not be disappointed with BLU!!

Hi!

Your co worker is a fruitcake if he thinks you will not see a difference unless you have a 61". Sure, that size tv would look great, but blu-ray also looks superb on even a 26" as KingBing pointed out. You picked a good site to research on!

No it's doesn't my friend have a 40 inch 1383x768 TV (it's not 1080p, but 720p compatible) and there's quite a bit of difference even at 15 feet. On 1080p it might even show more difference even at that distance.

640x480 resolution was invented with 27inch MAX, CRT in Interlace. 27 inch was considered HUGE back then. Interlace also forgive a LOT. A dvd that look nice on a 32 inch CRT (480i) tv can look like garbage on a 32inch 720p LCDTV. Not because LCD is worse, but because you can now clearly see all the defect of the MPEG2 compression.

While 1080p was developped with big display in mind, it all depend on the distance you're sit.

If you want a HDMI cable, check monoprice! All my cables come from there (35 foot, 2x6 foot, 1 Female-Female connector + 3 feet to extend the 35 foot one)

Yeah, well, our TV is only 32" & 1080i (new display's arrival is imminent!) and we can appreciate the upgrade in visual presentation BD offers, not to its fullest, but certainly above & beyond upscaled DVD. Not to mention that a great mix in multichannel lossless audio puts a stupid grin on my face every time.

Your co-worker (noting you didn't actually say "friend") is a dolt.

'Nuff said.

Don't worry, he is also my friend. But a dolt nonetheless.

I think your co-worker is basically broke and can't afford these things, so he is just trying to drag you down with him, so he'll feel better......or he is just a plain idiot....or both.

Sorry, mate.

You'll note that we are very quick to defend blu against baseless accusations such as these because, quite frankly, it is the greatest thing we discovered thus far on planet Earth.

I have a 42 inch Rear Projection LCD (Sony) and my 9 year old son can see the difference. He can't stand DVD anymore - which is too funny.

Yes, if you own an HDTV you want to upgrade to Blu-ray! Some titles are just stunning - like Transformers, Planet Earth, Dark Knight.

Go for it!

No that is not true. You can see a difference on smaller TV's too. I have a 40 inch and i can see a huge difference from DVD and Blu ray

No, you do not need to get an expensive cable. Just get a cheap one.

You were given false information. C'mon, I just have a 40", and I can tell a huge difference from DVD to blu-ray. DVDs make my eyes hurt now, too blury

Agreed. And I run a 32" 1080p and I dare anyone to tell me I'm not noticing a difference.

Hell, even my wife last night was stunned while we were watching 'Bolt' and said several times how life-like and realistic everything looked. I figure she's the litmus test -- if even she notices it (and she typically doesn't care one way or the other) then we must be on to something here.

Ouch, should have guessed the response to that one on "blu-ray.com." Welcome Glelas, keep reading and asking questions. Work on your own HT and you will be schooling your friend in no time. The difference is quite frankly night and day.

Someone here once mentioned something said by the wife of a a Toshiba employee, perhaps CEO. Something to the effect that HD DVD is going to win because everyone is making HDTV's and no ones is making blu-ray TV's.

Reminds me of the time a Best Buy employee couldn't tell me if the Blade Runner movie they carried was remasted in HD or not. He could only repeat over and over that old movies will be standard def because they are old and only new movies will be in HD.

In spite of my best efforts to tell him otherwise, he kept repeating himself. I thanked him for his time and put all the blu-rays back I wanted to purchase because of his stupidity. They lost at least $125 in sales that day.

Sometimes you just have smile politely, thank them, and walk away after 2 or 3 attempts. It is a fact that 50% of the population are on a prescription medication. This probably impairs otherwise good judgement.
