Default Blu-ray, Isn't worth it or is it?

I've had blu-ray for some time now. People tell me that blu-ray isn't worth it and I tell them it is but they just say back it's not special. I don't care what other people think but sometimes I wonder if it really is What do you think about blu-ray and why is it special? I just want to get on the topic of why blu-ray is worth all the money. I mean I don't know what i would do without blu-ray but it's just I want to know what your thinking.

Yeah, that's why I went with blu-ray. Besides blue being my favorite color, the smaller cases are vastly superior to DVD's. j/k if that wasn't obvious already.

I can see why people would say it isnt worth it here... $50 for a Blu-Ray? Neh dont think so! So ordering from UK is only solution.. $25 for a movie YES! But people only see the $50 price tag! Other bad thing, i love the little BD cases, but movies from UK come in those ugly fat PS3 game cases.. too bad

You know, I had a friend that always complained about how Blu-Ray wasn't worth it compared to DVD. Finally took enough of it from him and made a special trip to his place and corrected his problem. Now he gets wet when he watched a movie.

BTW: He was using the composite output (not component) instead of the HDMI to his TV.

My thought is if they are family, friends or co-workers to invite them over for a movie night and then let them go back home and watch standard movies. That should do it.

You see... this is what people need to start doing!!! GET INVOLVED WHEN SOMEONE IS COMPLAINING! They obviously haven't setup their equipment properly! Stage an intervention if you have to!!!

The other night I came home from work and heard some killer sound coming from my neighbours basement. He had the door open. So, being the HT enthusiast that I am, I invited myself in to check it out. First thing I check for was a Blu-ray player, and sure as shit, there was that glowing logo pronouncing itself like the heralding of approaching royalty. But, then I noticed that his new 52" LCD TV picture looked like garbage and him and several of his friends were all gawking at how they could see the blood and guts on 'Rambo' because of the size of the TV. I was appauled at how impressed they were with the WORSE THAN DVD image. So, naturally, I asked why the image was so poor. He said that it was pretty amazing for a movie downloaded from the internet and burned onto a DVD. Naturally, my next question was, "Why aren't you watching the Blu-ray?"

*brace yourselves... this next part might knock you clear out of your chairs*

His response was, "I haven't bothered to watch any Blu-rays yet because I don't think the difference will be worth it." I'm certain that I left two trails of fire behind me as I bolted back to my house for my 200+ Blu-ray collection to acquire some samples. Sure as sh!t, when I put the Blu-rays in, the entire group changed their tune. They went from "Oh wow.... Oh my God.... Did you see that?!?!? WOOOOOOOOO!" to complete and utter dear-in-the-headlights silence. It was like they were being brainwashed because not a single one of them would respond to me for the first five minutes as I tried to get their immediate impressions of the difference they saw from before my arrival on the scene. Eventually, when they came back to Earth, I asked how long it had been that he had his new setup running. He said that it was completed about 2 months ago?!?!?! I almost cried out of pity for the equipment. How could someone abuse $10,000 (estimate) worth of video/audio equipment for that long with sub-standard content???

When our schedules don't conflict I am also going to go over and tune his TV properly. I noticed some saturation and colour imbalance problems with the image that need rectifying before the image is perfect.

I have a couple of UK imports and those cases are pretty bad. I wonder who came up with THAT idea.

It's definitely worth it if you love films.

But only if you have the right equipment and don't watch movies on your laptop...

At first I also thought it wasn't worth it, thinking DVD was just fine enough as far as quality goes.

Then I bought a Full-HD LCD TV and a PS3. The PS3 came with a free copy of Spidey 3 and ever since watching that, I've made the switch to Blu-ray. I guess a consumer only realizes it's worth it when:
a) he has the right equipment to enjoy it
b) he experiences it first hand, with a decent blu-ray.

At least, that's how it went in my case. In a year's time, I changed from a total HD-naysayer (HD for TV, games and movies) to an HD adept.

I agree. Now, if they'd come out with display units that hold BD's it would be even better.

Time for my controversial answer: Yes and No.

For most movies it is worth it. For some, it is not.

Basically, your high special effects movies and movies that utilize a lot of surround sound get the biggest boost and are definatelly worth it. Since most of the movies that come out today fall into this category, For most movies it is worth it.

Movies that are comedies or dramatic comedies with mostly dialogue are not as worth it in my opinion. Although I am a huge fan of the movie Old School, I don't need to see a pimple on someone's face when watching the movie and there is very little surround material when I watch the DVD, so I probably would not pay the extra money to get it on Blu-ray, now if it was the same or a similar price and I didn't already own the DVD, that is a different story.
