Default Speed Racer (2008): As bad as they say?

Is Speed Racer (2008), a horrible film? Or just misunderstood?

I haven't seen it. While I sit through really bad stuff for the eye candy, which this definitely has, I'll need to see it on cable or something before I buy it.

Sometimes folks get a bit too self-indulgent when making films, and I can't donate two hours and real money for self-indulgence on someone else's part.

Fair enough.

I found the film well-crafted, despite all the negative press.

I wonder how many people have even seen the cartoon SPEED RACER?

I did as a child so I enjoyed a lot of the movie since it hit many aspects
dead on. It's spectacular visually, the cast is a lot of fun especially
John Goodman and Christina Ricci, and I enjoyed it even more on
second viewing.
I do think it's about 30 minutes too long and would be even better with
tighter editing.

Perhaps. I'd go along with that.

Yet, the structure is rather unique. The flashback within a flashback. The picture had adult film structure: in a film marketed to kids.

I feel this disconnect... is why the film failed and is hated.

But away from that... the film works.

I thought it was great. Instead of turning a cartoon into live action they really made a live action cartoon. It was loads of brainless fun.

It's not as bad as they say.

It's worse. It's like the Wachowski's adopted Uwe Boll.

I tried to watch it twice and could not get past the first 10 minutes. I think its just the amination style they used. It just looks horrible to me.

I blind bought it and thought it was pretty enjoyable. The only annoying thing was the kid, sprittle (I think that's his name), and the monkey.

I happened to love it. I was a big fan of the old animation show from when I was younger. I thought they captured the tone of the show pretty well. And man does it look awesome on Blu. I actually just picked it up last night on Blu at Blockbuster previously viewed.

Not that's it's misunderstood, it's just more of a kiddy film then expected, it does have many parts that anyone could enjoy, but it's pretty campy, I think many people were expecting more of a Transformers tone, while what we got was not that at all, the movie is still enjoyable and pretty good if you know what to expect.

I really haven't had much intrest in watching it, even before all the negative reviews, but I got it on Blu way back when Amazon had it fo 15 bucks. I figure that when I do get around to watching it it might as well watch it looking its beg st. But no,I haven't felt the urge yet.

Its great for what it is....a cartoon come to life. Not only does it look spectacular on Blu-ray but its just a fun movie. I thought the kid and the monkey were pretty funny. They stayed true to the cartoon. If you are fan of the cartoon then I can see no reason why you wouldn't enjoy this movie. I think too many people wanted a serious experience, but is that really feasible for this particular material? I don't know if it could work without completely changing everything you've come to know about Speed Racer since there wasn't anything remotely realistic in the cartoon. Just check your brain at the door before watching it and you'll enjoy it.
