Default Onkyo to release yet another Toshiba player

Looks like Onkyo is going to release a pimped out XA2 as their HD DVD player...

The official word is that the company supports both formats, and is hoping for a viable universal solution somewhere down the line.
Interesting marketing statement there .... a DVD player with HD support? Let's muddy the waters a little more...???

Re-badged xa2. Nice. Toshiba is still the only company in the world making hd-dvd players.

LOL!

I can't disclose their plans but can tell you that it is not a re-badge like RCA. Onkyo has a lot of pride in their products and will not go that way.
So, no pride or no faith?

Well, technically it's true, they probably upgraded the DACs and such in order to maintain their reputation

Somethign tells me they signed on the bottom line before really thinking about it, and this was the cheapest way they could get out of their requirements

You're right, it's not a rebadge in the technical sense. But, the spirit of the question was always whether it would be a pure new design.

An upgrade on the sound and the handling DVD (which would be tough considering how good the XA2 is supposed to be) is hardly anything at all.

I think you're right. This is a save face for both sides.

This just keeps getting better and better. Love the "prediction" by the A-man too...just shows you what he knows.

Is it me, or does anyone else think that by end of 4Q07 (best case scenario) or this time next year (worst case scenario) that HD DVD is going to be a COMPLETE joke and laughing stock?

The cheapest way is to not proceed with building the player.

It costs a lot more money to engineer a player, test it for compliance and QC, rig up a production line for it, create a marketing plan for it and then set up training sessions for tech support. Again, it's cheaper to dump the agreement for a fine than to actually produce a player with limited future viability.

Post Onkyo to release hd dvd player

The article states that Onkyo will have an hd dvd player out by fall with plans to at some point release a combo hd dvd and bluray player. I thought I heard Onkyo was prepping up their own bluray player, not hd dvd!

Proof: Look up the sales figures for the LG dual format player.

Heh, it's almost like: "What sales figures?"

A rebadged Toshiba is hardly anything to get excited about, but I'll bet it doesn't take the HD-DVD fanboi's long to go ballistic.

I'd really love to know, from Onkyo themselves, why they're even bothering at all?

It's obvious that they're not interested in being a factor in the HD realm right now so why not just sit it out until the format war is done vs. this?

What a waste.

The footnote to the article reads: "Onkyo is also working on a universal HD-DVD/Blu-ray player."

Also a waste. Just ask LG.

If it is a re badged Toshiba than it's little cost to them upfront so I'm sure they can make some profit from it.
