Default Toshiba knows no shame, plans to release super-resolution DVD player

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/05/30...lution-dvd-pl/

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/14299.cfm

Quote:
Citing Toshiba sources, the "Yomiuri Shimbun" newspaper has reported that Toshiba is set to launch a "Blu-ray killing" technology later this year.

The technology, which will be an "extension to the DVD format" will offer comparable video quality to that of current Blu-ray titles and now defunct HD DVD discs. The sources cited even said that the company will begin offering DVD players with this technology implemented within 6 months, an exciting proposition if true.

There is very few details available right now, but it is clear that these new "enhanced" DVD players will be significantly cheaper than Blu-ray players, perhaps even with a price point under $200 USD. On average, Blu-ray standalones still cost over $350 USD, so these new DVD players could put another nail in the coffin of the slowly adapted format.

If these players can somehow add an upscaling engine more powerful then the ones in Toshiba's current HD DVD player lineup, the quality should be outstanding and worth looking into.

We will absolutely keep you updated with any other information.
Hmm..Toshiba back from the grave?

This is very interesting.

Unless they've discovered some way of magically putting information on the disc that isn't there in the first place, this may turn out to be one of the biggest scams of the decade.

They have any money left after losing their shirts on HD-DVD?

What was Albert Einstein's definition of "insanity" again?

Isn't this that SUC stuff we've been hearing about?

I'm not sure if this will even sell well, seeing that Toshy lost not only the war (causing consumer mistrust), but millions trying to become victor. So far all the major studios have 100% support for BD, but c'mon Toshy. Just give in.

With all this talk of upconverting DVD's, no one has ever mentioned a technology of upconverting the standard audio tracks on a DVD, as far as I know.

Default ha

what they learned was that sony is arrogant to think they can still charge $28 bucks for a movie, and $350 for a player. Toshiba is trying to find a way to under cut them, and blu rays slow adoption rate( b/c of price gouging) might end up costing them millions. Take a note from Micosoft, make it cheap enough and people will buy, then make your money off the software,.i.e xbox 360...18 million units sold.

They need to just go away now and stop trying to get in the way of real progress. I so wish someone like Sony or especially Matustisha Corp. (Panasonic's parent company) would just buy out 51 percent of their shares and become majority holders and get a grip on this stupidity.

Yeah, the firesales and burning it down real cheap really worked for Toshiba greatly here this last time around.

LOL that's what I was thinking about. You can make the picture look almost as good as the Blu-ray, but definitely not the sound.

Let me get this straight:

1) Extension to DVD format. Check.
2) Comparable video quality to Blu-ray. Check.
3) Price point under $200. Check.

Format is: HD DVD.

When all else fails...try, try again.

Lame.
