Some studios have switched to not having special features on the rental discs. However, I believe that is only on DVD and not Blu-ray.
Edit: Here's a thread explaining it. Disney is offering stores a cheaper version that is rental only. It appears Fox is not messing with Blu-rays. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ghlight=rental https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ghlight=rental Last edited by fatediesel; 05-20-2009 at 08:28 PM. |

They won't be in a while....
Warner and FOX and maybe Disney have announced that they will be cutting out the extra content found on rental editions of their Blu-ray releases. It hasn't gone into effect yet, but, it will soon. |

Yeah, that's what I think. In addition, it might be less to manufacture a disc that has less content on it...so they're saving money that way. Even if it's only pennies per disc, that adds up over hundreds of thousands (or millions) of discs.

Quite a few of the discs I have rented from Netflix say Netflix on them rather than the normal disc art. This is DVD only, not the BDs I have rented.

Not to mention sales of rentals. Blockbusters used prices aren't always that amazing (though the 2 for $25 deal was good). Their used offerings will be even less appealing if they are barebones editions.
Makes me feel bad for BBV. I think in the late 90's they negotiated a deal to lower the prices they pay for movies (which is why they have a trillion copies of new releases now), so maybe this is the studio's chance to kind of go back on that agreement without completely breaking it... sell them cheaper movies, but give them less. Who knows. |
