I really feel like the pale look is intentional since the whole movie is so white and grey. Not trying to sound down on the HDR or whatever, but the BD pic looks more Oblivion to me.

It's possible (yes, anything's possible) that Universal will re-release this since they're now a Dolby Vision UHD Blu licensee.

The DV version supposedly has the detail that was lost in the current UHD release. It seems to me that this was a defective, poorly QC'd HDR10 master.

That's fine, but I found a frame grab from the film in the American Cinematographer article (May '13 issue) and the Blu-ray really does look like a pale imitation of it, FWIW.

I think a DV re-release would be the best way to go, yes. The HDR10 base layer (yes Freaky, that's really a thing) on the disc would have to be different from the existing iteration if the eventual DV output was to look as well resolved spatially as the current Blu-ray, so even HDR10 owners would benefit.

I still can't believe how detailed the regular Blu is, it looks more like 4K resolution than several UHD discs I could name! Combine that with the HDR & WCG and you'd have a very, very special disc.

It was wishful thinking to hope otherwise, but even on my new Oppo which has a better picture than the Samsung, there is more spatial detail on the BD in those scenes posted above. However as most have said, the UHD "looks" better because of the color volume (which in itself brings out a lot of subtle detail not visible on the BD). Not a fan of that "pale" look and no I didn't see this in the theaters.

I pick the UHD as well because of the HDR and beautiful colors.

Weird. That pale look was such a part of the movie for me. Oh well. I loved the flick so I might "upgrade" myself someday and compare them, if there's a good sale.

I would like to see a proper comparison of Cruise's face with the BD vs the UHD BD with SDR + 709.

You guys made me curious enough to buy it. The "Oblivion" bluray was one of my demo pieces with my Sony 790 and my old Panasonic ZT60. I've seen scenes from that movie so many times I remember all the detail.

Once my B6 and Oppo 203 arrive, I'll be sure to compare.

Stopped today into BB to pick this up and has Universal dropped the rounded slips on Uni releases? I noticed this, Lucy, The Huntsman: Winters War and already a new shipment of the Bourne individual releases with regular slip covers on them?

Is it only a first run thing or are they stopping that style of slips completely?

I should have figured this would happen, I LOVE the rounded slips and thought they made for the most beautiful UHD packaging so far.
I agree, I loved the rounded slips. Though it made them stand out more. Guess I'll be picking up the other Uni releases in the next few weeks before they're phased out.

Glad I picked up Lucy, Oblivion, Everest and Jason Bourne when I did. Though the greatest slip cover in da woirld couldn't convince me to buy Bourne Identity on Blu.

Bless me father, for I have sinned. I ordered Lone Survivor and the two Huntsman movies today because I want the natty slipcases before they disappear completely, and at £40 for all three thatsa spicy meataball. I even get some UHD movies along with the cases, what a bargain!!

Incidentally, Universal are re-releasing several titles on the 20th of February in fat amarays so they can be security tagged in-store, I think that's why Oblivion is currently out of stock at both HMV and amazon.
