Funny, my best tv is a 12 year old Samsung plasma. Looks like OLED is the way to go. Thanks for all your input. I guess Sony or LG at this point. I would like a 4K projector that handles hdr but still out of my price range.
Yep, the Magnolia clerk said if I wasn't happy with the LG CX, the only thing better would be a projection system. They cost a fortune, they're thousands and thousands of dollars. I tried them there and, honestly, unless you have a perfectly dark room, I wasn't impressed.

I don't think they make the LG CX anymore, I think there's a new line that replaced it.

Projector better than oled? Picture quality wise or size?

I was told that a projector has a superior picture, but I didn't agree, at least not in a room that is anything but absolutely pitch black, with no light leak.

I wonder how much a 100” OLED is?

Sony or LG oled is really the only way to go. For bettering those in projection you have to go into the top tier systems for far more.

For very pleasing 1080p/i film like imagery that isn't oled HDCRT or Plasma is where you'd have to look.

I hear that Panasonic OLEDs are absolute aces, even compared to other OLED brands. Only problem is that it's pretty unrealistic to grab one if you live in the U.S., they don't normally sell televisions here anymore.

If you don't plan to professionally calibrate then the Panny's offer very impressive "out of the box" colour accuracy to D65. As compared to other brands. That's what most people mean.

For the majority of purchasers who won't spend 300+ extra dollars to have someone 'dial it in' closer, the Panasonic brand is very consumer ready, friendly. And many of their OLED line had/has not only DV but HDR10+ compatability which is unique to them, so they were basically universal TV's for High Dynamic Range content signal chain.

I still think you'll find the A90J, the LG evo G1 and QD-OLED in general are better than the Panasonic sets being referred to.

Several post houses adopted the Pannies as their client monitors because of their pin-point accuracy, it’s not just about being the most ‘plug and play’ friendly brand as you appear to be suggesting. They really are terrific TVs, albeit with a few bugs and quirks like all sets have, and if anyone prizes pre/post calibration accuracy to the source (weird, right?) then they’re the ones to beat. And aside from that they were the first to use innovations like an additional heat sink to drive the panels brighter, but as they’re not available in North America they’re not part of these wider discussions, and even if they were the top of the line models cost more than the rest so would remain something of an esoteric choice.

Interesting. I thought that Sony was pretty highly regarded in that respect as well.

I have both Sony and Panasonic.

Sony excels in 24 fps motion processing and upscaling, The XR processor is definitely subtly boosting clarity and details on tiny objects.

Panasonic excels in near blacks (at least 2020 models) and out of the box colour accuracy. Sony is not that far behind but the near black floor is a tad raised by default and is undefeatable. Also Panasonic offer more calibration controls than Sony.

But where Sony does well is Reality Creation (Super Resolution on the Panasonic) and X-tended Dynamic Range. IMO these 2 are the unsung heroes which gets overlooked. The way the processing works IMO is class leading provided you have them at the right setting depending upon your source.

2022 will be an interesting year as Panasonic will be releasing their first 77 OLED although there seems to be some confusion if it will use latest LG EX panel and heatsink.

Because an excellent ass kicking should come with excellent production values.

You can fix the raised black issue and eliminate 90% of the problem on the Sony by setting point 1 in the 20 point adjustment to -12, -12, -12. Even though it should not have an effect on near blacks below 3%, it does. Display a 1 through 5% slide, flip between the modified 1st point and a non modified 1st point, and you will notice 1 through 3% are not as bright with the adjustment. So near blacks are no where near as elevated as before. I did that with my Sony A90J, and it now handles near blacks a lot better. You could probably lower all the way down to -15, -15, -15 and have a better gamma curve below 5%.

Watched the 4K, the color differences are apparent, but did not bother me. The Atmos mix is a definite upgrade. I don’t really care about duplicating the theater experience, since that would take a fat, smelly guy on his cellphone sitting next to me. So I guess you were right.
