Examples Look great. I suspect the version HBO was running a while back was open matte. At the time, I thought they'd zoomed it. It'd be great to capture that version on my hard drive in as uncompressed a broadcast as possible. I also recently saw The Fifth Element on Starz, which they're currently showing open in about the same ratio (it was shot Super35). It's the new transfer, with cropped visual effects sequences...but all the live action footage fills the frame without any cropping. It probably wasn't composed that way--sometimes the visual balance is clearly off--but I was reminded again how immersive all that extra screen real estate can be when one of these films I've seen countless times gets extra breathing room. It'd be cool if more directors shot and protected for both ratios, with different viewing conditions in mind...and saw to it both versions were made available in home video releases. I compared the pictures to the Dolby Vision version on Vudu. The UHD on vudu is sharper than both sets of images and I'm seeing more detail. This is why I bought a TV with Dolby Vision support. I can't speak for the UHD blu-ray, but this is not what I'm seeing on Vudu's UHD version.

You would have to do your own comparison with your own camera on both sources. Any claims that vudu is better than the BD must be proven. |

As a side note. There are a few UHD titles on Vudu such as San Andreas and Lego Movie that look soft compared to the Bluray. I already posted this on Vudu's forums awhile ago. So if the picture quality was remotely soft, I would have noticed. Fortunately, Oblivion looks fantastic on Vudu. |

I really wish armchair reviewers would just stop.
Stop taking shitty unbalanced camera photos. Stop comparing Blu to UHD by and not recalibrating between each source. Stop complaining about known 2K DI's being soft/double-dip. ![]() --edit-- I was not speaking specifically about this movie. I have not viewed it yet. My statement was more of a general one about some of the comparisons and complaints I have seen overall. Last edited by RealorFake4K; 08-13-2016 at 03:21 PM. |

You having an oled means nothing. You do know that oleds actually have softer pictures than LCDS right? Lol Sorry, but of anyone makes any claims you can back it up. There's way too many people that are upset with the softness of this movie to say my claims are false. Way too many. |

I own around 40 uhd blu rays. There are some great 2 upscales. The hopes were high for oblivion. It's a massive disappointment plain and simple. It blows my mind that anyone can't see it with this movie. I would suggest they may have eye issues or perhaps using a smaller tv which makes it more difficult to see the these flaws? I took over 10 comparison pictures, and in every 1 of them the uhd version is soft. It's not a coincidence when the same issue appears in every picture. I guess I don't completely blame folks for saying the pictures look out of focus, because it's hard to believe the difference is that stark, but unfortunately it is. One of the good posters on AVS that has ties to tv manufacturers said he made it 10 minutes into the movie last night and had to turn it off. He didn't want to ruin one of his favorite movies. The colors and hdr are excellent, and I think that is impairing people's judgement ad a whole. The hdr is excellent. |
