So wait I'm a little confused of the comparison pics in post #276 - the top is the bluray the bottom is UHD - right? If that's the case there's also evidence of black crush on the UHD edition

all the 4k BDs show up darker in pictures. i had some other pictures of great examples but kept showing up too dark despite being visible on screen. oh well, sharpness point is proven

Examples Look great. I suspect the version HBO was running a while back was open matte. At the time, I thought they'd zoomed it. It'd be great to capture that version on my hard drive in as uncompressed a broadcast as possible.

I also recently saw The Fifth Element on Starz, which they're currently showing open in about the same ratio (it was shot Super35). It's the new transfer, with cropped visual effects sequences...but all the live action footage fills the frame without any cropping. It probably wasn't composed that way--sometimes the visual balance is clearly off--but I was reminded again how immersive all that extra screen real estate can be when one of these films I've seen countless times gets extra breathing room.

It'd be cool if more directors shot and protected for both ratios, with different viewing conditions in mind...and saw to it both versions were made available in home video releases.

I compared the pictures to the Dolby Vision version on Vudu. The UHD on vudu is sharper than both sets of images and I'm seeing more detail. This is why I bought a TV with Dolby Vision support. I can't speak for the UHD blu-ray, but this is not what I'm seeing on Vudu's UHD version.

pay attention to textures. on the 4k version, the texture is completely "smoothed" over. toms face, the tree bark, the inner part of the crater of the pentagon. look at the sharpness and defintion of tom cruises eyes. Horrendous. Throughout the movie you will see texture for sure, but on the BD the texture is just so much more defined and clean.

I was at Best Buy and considered this one, don't own the blu Ray either but decided to wait on it, and glad I did. Wow....

Don't compare my pictures to your own tv, it doesn't work like that.

You would have to do your own comparison with your own camera on both sources. Any claims that vudu is better than the BD must be proven.

I've bought Oblivion UHD include Bluray. I'm happy that Atmos track and Bluray with special features.

Not double dip.

Dont Care...I knew the film was 2K DI mastered.

I don't need to prove anything. I have nothing to gain or lose whether or not you believe me. The picture looks outstanding on my OLED TV. Those pictures dont represent what I see at all watching the Vudu version.

As a side note. There are a few UHD titles on Vudu such as San Andreas and Lego Movie that look soft compared to the Bluray. I already posted this on Vudu's forums awhile ago. So if the picture quality was remotely soft, I would have noticed. Fortunately, Oblivion looks fantastic on Vudu.

Oh, give me a break. Those pics are bogus and not indicative of the 4K Blu-rays sharpness. Take a look at the bottom of the frame in the letterbox area. The time stamp, bar and word menu are blurred hence the image is blurred. You cant judge the image quality from a pic taken off your screen.

I really wish armchair reviewers would just stop.

Stop taking shitty unbalanced camera photos.
Stop comparing Blu to UHD by and not recalibrating between each source.
Stop complaining about known 2K DI's being soft/double-dip.

--edit--
I was not speaking specifically about this movie. I have not viewed it yet. My statement was more of a general one about some of the comparisons and complaints I have seen overall.

^^ yes, we're all making this up. You're right, we're all wrong.
Armchair reviewers, lol. How is staring at both sources on my 75" set being an armchair reviewer? Give me a break and get a life, noob.

You having an oled means nothing. You do know that oleds actually have softer pictures than LCDS right? Lol

Sorry, but of anyone makes any claims you can back it up.

There's way too many people that are upset with the softness of this movie to say my claims are false. Way too many.

I never said anyone is making anything up. I am tired of all of the half assed comparisons and people whining about purchases when the tech specs are known ahead of time.

Walk us through your comparison technique for blu and UHD. Please enlighten us.

Have you watched it yet? If you haven't, you certainly suggest doing so. The more feedback the better.

Enjoy your soft image on your LED TV. Claiming an image you cant even view on your TV looks soft as well. You can't even see the Vudu DV version. That's why I chose a TV that can do both versions of HDR. I never claimed the 4K bluray wasnt soft.

I own around 40 uhd blu rays. There are some great 2 upscales. The hopes were high for oblivion. It's a massive disappointment plain and simple.

It blows my mind that anyone can't see it with this movie. I would suggest they may have eye issues or perhaps using a smaller tv which makes it more difficult to see the these flaws?

I took over 10 comparison pictures, and in every 1 of them the uhd version is soft. It's not a coincidence when the same issue appears in every picture. I guess I don't completely blame folks for saying the pictures look out of focus, because it's hard to believe the difference is that stark, but unfortunately it is. One of the good posters on AVS that has ties to tv manufacturers said he made it 10 minutes into the movie last night and had to turn it off. He didn't want to ruin one of his favorite movies.

The colors and hdr are excellent, and I think that is impairing people's judgement ad a whole. The hdr is excellent.
