To be fair, the 72" LG C8 OLED is $7000, not $15000. 7K is still damned expensive but I believe that isn't a horrible price if you were buying a high end projector.

I paid $3100 for my 65" C8 with a 5 year warranty from Costco.

I too was looking forward to getting a projector with a CIH screen around 2012 or so, but now that I know what I know about HDR a projector is just not a viable option for UHD because of the horrible tone mapping issues it would present.

You make it sound as if LCD is inferior or something, which is absolutely not the case.

It'll be LCD for me always until Mini or MicroLED is available. Just enjoy your X940D. Despite the issues I personally had with it, it is still a great set! Oh, and while HDR with projectors might not be the same as with OLED or LCD, it is still a great feature and a noticable upgrade from plain old SDR 1080p.

I'm lucky to have a movie room where I can sit as close to the screen as I feel like, but yeah size is definitely a concern in a different situation.

Blahh. Well, thank you, I appreciate knowing. Guess I'll redeem the digital copy that came with the UHD disc after all.

Here we go. I’ll skip the small sizes, image retention still very prevalent on the latest models, black crush, ABL, non-existent dark detail etc. Give me a nice big, bright Z9 all day.

We do but getting enough light to make HDR anything close to it's capability is a struggle unless one uses a small screen which then negates the reason to use a projector in the first place.

How small a screen? If we can get good results with anything over 77" I'd say we are still doing better than most 4K HDR panels which cap at 77" and for a fraction of the cost. Of course we will have to keep the room very dark, but that's the name of the game

Totally depends on the projector. I'm getting 250 nits on a 16' wide screen but realistically you really want at least twice that to get more specular highlite effects.

I'm looking at a projector that can do 500 nits next month but it's not for the faint of wallet.

Is that 100" diagonal?

I have a 100 inch screen . Unfortunately my projector does not do 4K but I plan to upgrade as some new not so expensive ones have been hitting the market.

When you are right you are right! Thanks for the info about the current prices of the LG 77 inch OLED TV. It does appear that they can now be purchased for considerably less than $10K.

We agree about the importance of HDR and that the lack of HDR from consumer projectors makes them a nonstarter. Oblivion is an excellent example of what HDR can do. Most here agree that the image of the UHD HDR version of the film is soft. Fortunately, its wonderful HDR makes it a treat to watch anyway, or so it seems to me.

I wish more 4K monitors would get HDR. I was looking at an 27" LG model with HDR the other day and they wanted more for it than a typical 49" 4K TV.
