You took my post out of context. And IMO your statement is false as well. iTunes 4K is incredible and Apple TV 4K is one of the most powerful video machines available to consumers. I’ll take the 4K Dolby Vision stream of Blade Runner 2049 over the physical HDR10 disc any day.

I know you made this post in September but I was always under the impression that using your equipments (tv and 4k) sharpness was a no no? |

Again you took it out of context. Discussion was wether iTunes 4K and UHD come from the same “filtered” master and I was replying that yes they look the same. Obviously compression is different and what not, but that’s not what was being discussed.

It is. But in this case - speaking about Oblivion on UHD - the UHD has been softened so heavily that it can be sharpened just as heavily without incurring most of the usual artefacts that result from such a process, which in itself proves how much high-frequency information is missing from the 4K master. If I do what I do with Oblivion (on the Panny player: mid and high frequency luma sharpening both to +6 and edge correction to +1) to any other movie it becomes an edge-enhanced mess but here it just works.

Eh, it doesn’t matter to me. I think it looks pretty good. Geoff thinks it’s filtered, I’ll take his word for it. But it’s definitely not strongly filtered. And the regular Blu is sharpened, as can be seen from the caps. So there’s no point in comparing the Blu with the UHD, or sharpening the UHD to match the Blu. IMO of course.

The upgraded Dolby Atmos audio is easily worth the $10 I paid for the UHD and the fact that I prefer the warmer look is just icing on the 4K cake.

Really comes down to whether you prefer HDR or detail. It has a lovely HDR pass. I've watched both and am quite conflicted over which I'd watch next time.

I would prefer both which is why I had invested in the format and own more than 100+ UHDs.. For titles like Oblivion, 3:10, Dredd, King Kong etc. I prefer the picture quality of the Blu-ray. T2 - Please don't start asking as it went straight to classifieds at halfway mark. ![]() Coming to audio, I thought the LFE was lacking on the Atmos mix and this has been confirmed my many at AVSForum. So Oblivion is sadly a botched release on 4K UHD IMO. |
