And the BD is not Ginsu knives sharp if it is time to get your eyes checked or the sharpness setting is set to high.

The BD is reference quality.

I am going to an A-B comparison tonight or weekend (if I get the time). Wish I hadn't sold my UB-700 when I bought the UB-820 as it would have been easier to do such comparisons instead of flipping the discs.

I can keep going rocky but I think you get the point. It’s better so for you to dismiss it with a so what says volumes.

So you really feel that comparatively speaking, the difference between DV and HDR10 is the same as the difference between Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD?

No not an exact comparison. I was pointing out progress. Dolby Vision is the next step above HDR 10. To dismiss it because it doesn’t fit your point is telling. Just like you dismiss Oblivion UHDs lack of detail that the Blu Ray possess. I like the uhd and dv version of oblivion better in some ways over the Blu Ray but there is no denying the detail lost even if you try soooo very hard to explain it away.

DV and HDR10 difference is marginal at best.
ATMOS and True HD is the same. TrueHD is the container.
TrueHD is better than DolbyPlus

I've spoken with a few insiders - off record but the general consensus is that what Atmos and DTS-X brought was height speakers (or front and rear presence) speakers. As for HDR 10, it was static metadata as oppoesed to dynamic which DV uses. HDR10+ used dynamic but the lower nit panels (450 to 800 nits) benefit from DV to kick up those highlights. Higher nit panels (1000 to 2500) used HDR10 or HDR10+.

One director looks at HDR as a paint brush but honestly, so is the film stock used. So is the tint used, the cinematography, the use of shadow, hell every step in film making is a paint brush. HDR is another that can be utilized to work out of the box just like frame rate. Three directors have confirmed to me, that 24fps has always been used since silent movies, to save on film budget - it's what we've become used to but I submit that just because it's been the 'norm' for so long doesn't mean I have to like it. I prefer higher frame rates. I've never liked the jitter or stutter of 24fps. My eye sees detail so much better at a higher frame rate.

I also believe that you cannot use the same picture setting for 4K HDR discs as you do for Bluray because the sources are very different. It's like using the same picture setting for 1080i cable as you do for bluray. If you're using the same setting for 4K discs as bluray, you're doing one of those a big injustice.

Yes I do understand all of this. Rocky was dismissing Apple TVs Dolby vision. I was making the point that every incremental benefit shouldn’t be just dismissed as no big deal just cause he doesn’t have it. Just using comparisons.

Not every upgrade in home theater makes a drastic difference. But that doesn’t mean one should dismiss it like he did.

I would also suggest anyone here that has an Apple TV to sample Vudu (better audio than iTunes moves for the most part) through it and rate the Dolby vision of oblivion or even blade runner 2049. Pay attention to the audio. Full sound and very close to disc audio. Of course it’s not quite as good but I think many will be surprised how close it is

Good lord, Vudu audio is so bad... iTunes audio is worse? JFC.

Did you even listen to what I suggested? I don’t have crap audio equipment or bad ears. You do realize that I’m directly listening to my uhd discs and then the same segment on Vudu? I’m not using a sound bar you know. Never claimed that it was equal to uhd. Just closer than it used to be. Especially on newer movies.

Here is an excerpt from a user on avs forum:
I recently watched Avengers: Infinity War (on VUDU) using a 4K roku stick and my amp showed 7.1 atmos and the video (JVC rs400) and audio was very close to the disc. Actually not sure if I could tell the difference, I was very impressed!

In no way am I touting Apple TV or Vudu as superior. But studios are giving digital priority now. Weeks ahead of uhd releases. Cheaper by up to $10 sometimes. Quality that is getting pretty close to uhd. And many titles in 4K that are not even out on uhd (edge of tomorrow). I really wonder how long studios will be putting out uhd.

I mean, I can only report what I see (or hear, in this case). I've tested back and forth with streaming and disc before, even just this week actually, and the audio always immediately stood out as less clear and dynamic. I tested old movies and new, stereo tracks and 7.1 monsters. I'm not even someone who would consider themselves an audiophile, but it still stands right out to me.

Maybe it's because I use studio headphones, so the difference is right there in my ear. Maybe it's the movies I randomly chose. Maybe it's because Disney's recent discs don't have the best audio anyway, so Avengers IW was a bad test? Maybe it's a combination of factors. I dunno.

I dunno what this chicken little stuff has to do with anything. Even if your worst case fears bear out that doesn't make the audio sound better, it just means we have to live with it.

It's not about the number of speakers, it's about the compression and bitrate.

The point I am making is that it seems like discs days seem to be numbered. So I’m all for iTunes and Vudu improving upon their video and audio quality. And it doesn’t seem like I’m the only one that thinks that the Atmos from iTunes and VUDU sounds pretty good.

They're numbered, but it's a high number. Not like they've vanishing any time soon. My experience with the audio quality on streaming is one of many reasons to get discs as long as they last. You get a digital copy 9 times out of 10 anyway.

No disagreeing there. Every uhd I get has a 4 k digital of course and thus my ability to compare. I readily admit that some of my digital versions audio are audibly inferior to the discs. Many newer ones at least on my equipment sound very close.

One of my point still stands though. Many movies they are not even releasing on uhd, at least not now. For example, Edge of tomorrow has been out on Vudu/iTunes 4K for a few years now. No disc. Why? It sold well on Blu Ray. Also the remastered 4K wrath of khan. Where is it on UHD? This is why I also like having the option of getting them on streaming as well.
