IIRC this is one of those early UHDs which had their black levels mistakenly mastered to 0.005 nits rather than 0.0, and depending on how the TV reads the metadata it could lift the blacks slightly.

But do double check if your black level is set correctly to begin with though! No need to check DV settings as the disc doesn't have DV

Ah, interesting. I had forgotten about that issue. The only problem with that is that I saw the same problem on the new American Graffiti disc. I'll check my black levels with the Spears & Muncil disc.

The 2016 LG oleds were crushing blacks. I used to have the E6 one and had the same experience.
Many Uni titles have this issue that they never reach zero black. The early titles were notoriously bad in this aspect. It's not really creative intent but more likely incorrectly mastered discs.

I had forgotten that the UB820 will also tell you what the minimum luminance is so I checked both Oblivion and American Graffiti, and they were both 0.0050. Universal is still incorrectly mastering their discs after all these years.

Anyway, using the UHD Spears & Munsil disc, my HDR10 Black Level is now 48 down from 50 and DV is at 49. The tv has around 130 hours on it, so I'll recheck the levels again at around 200. Thanks for your help, guys.

Don't just look at the numbers, trust your own eyes 50 is a default value for black level on LG OLEDs, but remember that basically every panel is different.

On my previous panel the correct value was 50, on the new one, after the replacement, it's 48. My TV was not professionally calibrated, but on many movies I know backwards I clearly saw how the blacks were too elevated at 50. (even though the bars were still black; on my set they start to brighten up at 51)

PS. You can also check if you have the dynamic tone mapping option enabled, it can elevate blacks in darker scenes, at least on my B8.

PS2. I will check my disc tomorrow and let you know how it looks on my TV with both settings.

This is still $10.49, for slackers and new-comers. The warm, colorful but slightly filtered 4k, and the cool-blue but tack-sharp blu ray, in one convenient slipcase. Are we an effective team?

How about they effectively go back and redo the UHD here. Bring back the razor sharpness.

That would be fantastic, but I don't see Universal licensing this out anytime soon, or re-releasing it for any reason, with a new, unfiltered master.

I've often pondered WHY they even filtered it at all, in the first place...Weird, that.

It was one of their earliest titles, they were still figuring shit out. Look at Lionsgate and that run of several early UHDs they released with completely ****ed up video levels.

I'd still rather watch the UHD of Oblivion than the BD tho, not gonna lie

You and I will never see eye to eye on this one. Proof positive John Lennon’s “Imagine” will only ever just be a song.

Yeah I still don't care or need 57 speakers to be able to enjoy a film.

Movie is great. No one can really answer your question otherwise because it depends on preference. The 4k is softer with a warmer color tone and nice HDR, the BD is cooler in color with crisp details. There are cap comparisons you can look at.

I doubt the BD alone is much cheaper.

It helps.

Spielberg & Lucas: sound is 50% of the movie experience. And Oblivion has one hell of an audio experience.

Lucas is also the same fella who dismisses his own tin-eared dialogue by literally saying that the Star Wars films are "in essence silent movies".
