Popped this in to compare on my OLED and I’m seeing some odd things now. I see what Geoff was saying but I also noticed the skin tones are more neutral. On my last 2 Vizio’s there was blotches of red on faces. Still looks beautiful though

It's really not the greatest encode ever. TBH I've seen this blocky colour noise in several UHDs since then but it's not as objectionably chunky as it is here, I'm just guessing but I think that a certain encoder package or HEVC update is responsible and it's still taking some time to refine its output.

Justice League rocked!
A nice simple and quick scene to show off Atmos is in the opening scene of 2049 when Gosling's ship flies overhead the camera from back to front and onto the screen. Great sense of 3d space overhead (same thing shortly later when the little satellite thing is doing recon).

Of course in this instance you would need the 4 ceiling speakers to give the proper effect. Most movies use the Atmos channels for height ambiance, but Blade Runner used it also for nice discrete channel work too.

I only have two Atmos upfiring speakers and I still got blown away by it

Yeah being that it was my first UHD screening (I won't count Lincoln Lawyer ) I didn't really notice. But having watched on 3 panels now I certainly see it meow. I really noticed the patchy skin tones on the P, but it's not present on my B7 though

Finally picked this up. It looks excellent. The only complaint I would have are the occasional scenes where the grain is really noticeable and intense. The scene where Deckard is examining the photo is probably where it appears to be the most prominent.

I did the following to get the Dolby Atmos/TrueHD more listenable on a 5.1 system. Went to the audio menu of my Sony X-800 UHD BD player, set output to PCM instead of bitstream and then set Dinamic Range Compression to OFF.
This way I let the receiver do the 7.1 to 5.1 downmixing ignoring the metadata on the Dolby TrueHD/Atmos bitstream for downmixing, this gets the audio track far more listenable and pleasant to listen for the two hours of the movie.
Thanks for the recommendation. I just purchased a 4K player and watched my first UHD BD title - Blade Runner. I also have a 7.1 AVR but am only configured to 5.1. I followed your recommendation, and after doing a comparison in a few places, I noticed that the mix seems less aggressive (in a good way) and more balanced with your method.

Question: Is the problem with our configurations specific to Blade Runner's Dolby Atmos mix or all object-based surround mixes (Dolby Atmos, DTS-X)? Do you use your PCM/DRC OFF approach for all movies with object-based mixes (when a channel-based one isn't available)?

It's alright, it means that BR will look great while Close Encounters will look like an unholy mess, as several OLED owners will attest (and not just in that thread, there's been a bunch of mewling about it on AVF too). They're the other way around on my Zed

I won't answer for Mr Van Halen but it's been my personal experience that most movies with immersive audio already downmix rather nicely into 5.1, but for whatever reasons BR's Atmos mix doesn't play well with some channel-based confgurations. Even in 7.1 TrueHD it still sounds really "hot" and unbalanced on my Denon X2200 AVR, so I did the PCM trick that was recommended and it really made a difference.

Just got this disc very recently...the colour noise business (If I'm talking about the same thing) is pretty distracting,
I was seeing this in a lot of Netflix HDR content but no one seemed to be talking about it(I thought I was going mad), but this is the first disc I've seen it showing up.

Do we know what is causing it, compression, poor encoding?
Why is it not being flagged more often in reviews and the like?
And are there many other titles with this issue?

I watched the 4K disc for the first time last night and was extremely impressed with how it looked. What really stood out to me was all the detail and clarity that I saw in the model shots. They just looked incredible. This is going to be a disc I revisit quite often.

I'm watching this with a 5.1 setup and at 58:12 the left rear speaker makes a horrible scratchy/unplugging kind of noise.

Is there something wrong with my gear, or is that inherent to the sound mix somehow?

I did not hear anything like what you described when I watched my copy. I had the volume up pretty loud, too.

I have no idea why your experience was different.

It wasn't quiet, you wouldn't even need the volume up. Similar in level to the gunshots. Happened in exactly the same place three times in a row.

Initially, I would suspect the disc if it happens at the same spot every time. If the problem was with your equipment I would think it would manifest more randomly and with other discs.

I would try to test the disc on another home theater set-up if you have access to one at a friend's home or at a store, perhaps.
