I agree. It is good to remind yourself of the good things in life too.

It's incredible how fast my expectations change. A year ago the Fifth Element remaster on blu-ray looked amazing to me, but now seeing the UHD it looks "terrible" in comparison. It's just crazy how fast great can go to meh in the tech world. Obviously a huge, huge swath of my collection will never be upgraded, and I am not saying BDs are unwatchable by any means. It's just I'm kind of sad to lose how amazing 4k remasters on BD looked until UHD came around.

Yes, newer material will have more HDR "highlights" because they're being captured and graded that way - but older films will still benefit as well because you're no longer limited to the crushed down dynamic range we've had since the beginning of television.
The point I'm getting at is that many movies are filmed with the understanding of projector limitations, or how it will be presented on home video. So, utilizing full-range HDR for a lot of films will actually be a detriment to the intended picture.
This is why I touched on how each movie would benefit most from evaluating HDR implementation on a shot-by-shot basis.

HDR actually looks a lot like when I would scan slides with a film scanner. Pictures that I took of a tree while covered in in fog had the bright silver outline of the sun breaking through the branches. The active light used to scan the negative made that silver light "pop" in a way no normal print could do.
Other times, though, something can be naturally overexposed, and HDR only exacerbates the flaws already present. I don't think it's wise to think that HDR is the definitive answer to hi-def improvement.

You're making nearly the verbatim argument people made when they were scanning older films at 4K or 8K...stuff that wasn't meant to be seen when projected, etc. etc.
It turned out to be much ado about nothing then and it's the same now.

No, this is not the same thing. Your counter-argument is about not TOUCHING the source, just SCANNING it for preservation.

This is more like an argument about using DNR to remove grain, or not.

An 8k scan isn't going to make the original 8mm source magically more improved, nor enhance inherent flaws.
HDR can be used to provide inferior results, just like any other type of digital cleaning, colorizing B&W movies, color matching, contrast alterations, DNR removal, etc... it's HOW it is used that matters most.

It may be "nothing" in your mind, but it's a real issue; it doesn't go away just because it isn't significant to you.

Not that there has been that many, but show me where it's been an issue with catalog titles?

Stuff like Ghostbusters, Unforgiven, Crouching Tiger, etc. look great.

"An issue" is entirely subjective. Whether it causes a problem for any particular viewer (and to what degree) is entirely independent of the fact that there are effects and elements that are visible in high-fidelity representations of high resolution scans that were intended to be presented very differently (according to the technologies of the day) than they are now.

Just noticed it on Amazon.

Again, what is the problem?
What title has caused this concern?

Again, whatever problems (and to what degree) are entirely up to the individual viewer.

Wait, so the regular UK version doesn't even come with Dangerous Days in any form? It's just the UHD movie, BD movie and the digital copy?

This is clearly what that other more 'spensive "4 disc" listing is for

I've got the French one on order but it still lists nothing but DVDs in both the picture and the amazon listing, it's very odd. It even says "4K + Blu-ray + DVD" on the banner at the top but I can't quite work out how it's gonna break down. UHD + FC BD + DVD x4 of Dangerous Days, the branching 'archival' versions, enhancement archive and workprint mayhap? But why on earth would you use the DVD for the archival versions when you've got a perfectly decent BD equivalent? Hmmmm.

And is it me or is the lack of transparency with the studios getting this sort of information out there getting worse by the day? I know their home video depts are going down the tubes but **** me, this stuff is so opaque I don't know why they even have PR depts any more.

Yeah, we still don't even know if Dangerous Days is in HD.

The UK 4-discer's specs appear to have been revealed by zavvi (UHD + the 3 BDs from the 30th anniversary, check the UK BR thread in the international forum up there ^) so I'd say it's a safe bet that Dias Peligrosos is in SD just like before. Still, it's not like I pinned my hopes on it or anything as I took that rumour with a rather large pinch of salt, given that it basically emanated from the digital bits.

No!
Please that can't be true. Why the heck aren't they using the 1080P Source they have for Dangerous Days?!
