This forum is USEFUL.
I had a pre-order for the USA 4K thanks to info here then moved it to the UK 2 disc pre-order thanks to info here. I've just cancelled that and pre-ordered the UK collector's version thanks to info here!

Do we know if they went back to the 65mm source for the effects shots? Wasn't that done for the prior blu-ray?

The movie was remastered in 4K for the 2007 Final Cut, including the 65mm originals for the VFX as you say. The Blu was simply a natural offshoot from that process, what they did for that specific disc won't have any impact on the 4K UHD edition of that restoration.

Would be hilarious if the touched up VFX shots were rendered at 2K though.

How so? VFX is still mostly upscaled 2K a good 10 years later so it's not some major scandal if the tinkered shots were 2K, and they will have already been competently upscaled for inclusion in that original 4K master. As mentioned upthread when HH asked, it's possible that the 4K disc will reveal a few more flaws in the source but such are the travails of older VFX/optical work when viewed in 4K. And they're certainly not going to pay to redo all the digital tinkering in 4K now, so it will be what it will be.

Oh no, I'm sure it'll look great.

Watching people bicker about "real 4K" is a guilty pleasure.

I can't recall the provenance of this claim, but to my recollection, all CGI work for the Final Cut was performed and output at 4K (yes, even back then).

I'm curious.....the Amazon listing for the standard US 4K UHD release says it contains 4 discs but they don't detail what's on the 4 discs. I know the UK has a 4-disc 4K Special Edition which contains the Final Cut UHD disc as well as the 3 BDs from the 30th Anniversary blu-ray digibook set (which I already own). Is the US release REALLY 4 discs and are these the same discs included in the UK Special Edition?

It's not that far back, and there is very little

Very true. The degrading quality for every celluloid generation when making optical effects is much more obvious than 2K VFX upscaled to 4K.

No evidence of it. Too early.

And really, "boned up"?!
You know what that means, right?

One irritation is that if, like me, you decide to pay more for the special edition then you have the dubious privilege of having to wait an additional 3 weeks after the 2 disc release to get it! Not very 'special' at all.

Is there any particular reason to do this anyway? The only ones I can think of are:

1. You never bought any of the prior BR editions on blu-ray (SHAME on you!).
2. You're anal about having everything in one box.

Cons, on the other hand...

1. Waiting three additional weeks.
2. More money.
3. Greater chance of damage via shipping.
4. Crummy artwork (IMO...I've always despised that unicorn cover, especially when they have so many great pieces of BR art to choose from. I'm very pleased that I sill own the original five-disc BR set with the Alvin artwork. I'll be holding on to that and will have the 4K for the FC, so why shell out more for the same content?).
