Apparently more news to come on Wednesday. Note to Steed and Tob, maybe that means you guys will be getting to see even more of Liverpool and Chelsea. Tob, I get to watch the 2nd half of Arsenal v. Aston Villa tonight…looking good so far. ....and I see we've got a new signing seated in the stands with the other players.
You rang?

Yeah I said here or somewhere on the interwebs that I had a chat to someone at sky the other week thru my retail connections and they have something BIG rolling out in November.

To that end, the two primary considerations involve wide color gamut and dynamic range.

In terms of color, the digital cinema distribution master uses XYZ encoding which easily covers the entire range of 2020, so, no big problemo there. However, the real challenge is with dynamic range and the limiting nature of the current D-Cinema distribution master in terms of luminance(12-bit samples with gamma 2.6). So, with an increase in brightness likely causing a need for more resolution in color gamut, if…
1. the D-Cinema system design stays with 12bits, we’ll require a new EOTF (like Dolby PQ), or, on the other hand, if

2. system interfaces can increase to 16-bits per component, there should be plenty of room to add everything.
Impressive, and it is nice to hear that they have started looking into it. My guess is that they will stick with 12-bit video and use a new transfer function but both methods would lead to the same result.

I have been reading some of the articles released about the HPA Tech Retreat and will summarize some of the things that sounded interesting.

From day 1 of the HPA Tech Retreat the "The Creative Panel" considered HFR to be a novelty and talked about the importance of ACES, HDR, and OpenEXR.

From day 2 of the HPA Tech Retreat the "UHD Content Protection" talked about the copy protection that we are likely to see and what benefits UHD can provide. Warner Bros. made a chart which compares the different features of UHDTV. In terms of visual benefit the Warner Bros. chart labeled UHD resolution as low, color volume as medium low, frame rate as medium high, and dynamic range as high. The "Expanded Color Gamut" panel presented a laser projector using the Rec. 2020 color space. The laser projector showed some color test patterns and a video clip from a carnival.

From day 3 of the HPA Tech Retreat had panels that covered the bit depth of sensors, HDR systems, pixels, and resolution. The "ACES Version 1.0" panel discussed the details of ACES 1.0 such as color space and dynamic range.

I don't know what "copy smile" means?

But anyway, Welcome back, I hope Geoff (fellow UK-er) soon also reappears.

Anyway, we’re (England and the US) both following in the footsteps of India – http://advanced-television.com/2015/...a-4k-coverage/ but good thing is, no matter which country be participating in the 4K non-cinematic experience, the learning curve for 4K capture, production and delivery of sporting events is advancing with each testing….(U.S. event from Dec. 23 - http://www.intelsat.com/blog/media-b...live-4k-uhdtv/ ).

Things like shooting the Lakers game at Staples and capturing play at an amateur football game with a new 20x zoom lens, namely Canon’s ultra-telephoto zoom (50-1000 mm) which was created as 4K worthy glass... http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/about_...01e02480d63283

Thanks for taking the time to provide folks who couldn’t attend, link(s) to rather fine reporting/transcribing by Adam W. given the flurry and rapidity of the info presented each and every year. On the other hand, you may not be doing some non-member readers a service because I guess it may be difficult for the typical google-wikipedia-educated to *debate* “some of the sharpest minds in post, production, broadcast, and distribution….. the participants are people in the trenches: DPs, editors, colorists, studio heads, post-house heads, academics, and engineers. There's no better place to take the pulse of the industry and get a glimpse of where things are headed”.

Overall, that day I came away quite pleased as the presenters confirmed my (our) feelings about the potential value of HDR, which we’ve been discussing on and off here going back for at least the past 2 years, long before it became the UHD flavor of the day by video journalists and tweet hounds, …..like enlightenment about nits beyond 100 with the DYN mode of Dolby’s PRM 4200/4220…

Then, afterwards, when flipping back to traditional non-HDR mode, it’s amazing how much RAW imagery (be it from the Alexa, RED, Sony--whatever high end camera be your acquisition device) is clipped at 100 nits.
To, HDR isn’t just only nits but also contrast

One thing I’ll add to Adam’s fine write-up is that the last name of the digital colorist whom he couldn’t remember or was unaware of?…is ‘Cole’ (who cut his teeth back in 2001 on Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring).

If I recall correctly, among other things, that day included some tidbits about CES, consumer TVs (Steed, I'm talkin to you ), physical media (Blu-ray) which Blu-ray connoisseurs should find interesting.

As an aside, even though we are a dedicated physical media forum , just to give a little news to those members who plan on supplementing Blu-ray with a tiny bit of streaming now and then ….something not mentioned during the formal presentations was that this year Netflix will debut a HDR quality certification….as I hear it, first to apply to HD.

Not just ‘Warner Bros.’ but the chart was by Wendy A., past President of SMPTE and Senior VP of Technology at WB. Not some ‘paper shuffler’ VP but, acutely aware of (and active in) the most esoteric technological concepts involving D-Cinema.

And a Josh (Pines) spiel on color science , of which I would have liked to have heard his take on Maxwell spot effect and how/if he believes it is of any significance with spiky spectral distributions and display matching; but alas, perhaps a topic for another future HPA.

I see no ‘official’ announcement (as of this moment - http://www.kodak.com/ek/US/en/Kodak_...od_Studios.htm ), but filmmakers in the U.K. working on motion pictures (budgeted at ~ 15 million dollars or less) can expect an official heads-up from Kodak offering a great deal on a total package including Kodak film stock, 2 rental film cameras, processing and datacine (scanning the celluloid) ….so I was informed at one of the HPA breakfast roundtables where much of what is discussed and revealed is just as important and more candid as the formal presentations given in the meeting rooms, which Richard has thoughtfully made available to readers.

Now that is a wonderful idea. A lot of filmmakers assume you have to shoot digital. Film is not for everyone, but if people can see what it is capable of, you won't go back.

I used digital cameras for many years. I saw little images on a phone or laptop. One day we pulled out my father's 35mm slides. The detail and richness of color was stunning and was on a huge 100" screen.

Then, we saw my 65 year old mother as a 16 year old girl before her birthday party. My grandfather had used a 120mm Hasselblad camera. That was simply amazing to see. I said to everyone, "Why did we stop using film?"

I inherited my father's 35mm Pentax ME, grabbed some Fuji Velvia 100, and I haven't looked back.

I remember I went hiking with some college friends of mine up in Grand Marais, very close to the Canadian border. I was taking a few pictures as we got to the top of the hill and fumbled a bit when changing film rolls, which I got some ribbing for.

At the end of the day, we hiked up a hill for a good 30 minutes to see the sun set. They all had cheap cell phones and the sensors got overwhelmed by the light and they couldn't get a photo. I looked in my viewfinder, underexposed by a 1/2 stop, and snapped away. I got my revenge.

Thanks for that Penton man. very interesting reading. Didn't understand it all but got the gist. The only part I didn't like was the acknowledgment of the next generation loving their smartphone and tablets. Yuck!
