I wouldn't hold my breath for Star Wars. Historically, Lucasfilm doesn't release Star Wars movies onto a new home video format until there's a nice healthy installed-base built up. Give it another three years, maybe.

That was more of a George Lucas thing as he was very trepidatious about releasing on new formats before there was a significant portion of people invested in it. I don't see Disney waiting that long though.

If, by trepidatious, you mean "afraid of not raking in a ton of money"...

While Force Awakens is definitely exciting to get on UHD, can you imagine the result of an announcement for the original trilogy theatricals restored and on UHD? My god, the earth would shake.
Wonder if they ever even bother with Attack of the Clones, since it was filmed in 2k as far as I know. |

Dolby Vision is very important and makes HDR-10 look like crap.
All the titles coming out now will get remastered sometime in the future in Dolby Vision, as that'll replace HDR-10 completely. It's best to just wait for the quality releases in a few years. |

I don't think it could look much better than the BD unless they went back and re-acquired/re-rendered assets at 4K (which, given the budget and popularity involved here, they really should).
Not even 2K; it was shot in 1080p (and less than that in visible resolution, as it's 'Scope ratio). |

Well, in terms of recreating the HDR version of the movie, it certainly should. Vis-a-vis the conventional theatrical release, though, I doubt it would add much. The standard BD is pretty close to the spatial resolution of the DCP and the compression/encoding is excellent.

Would be interested to know your source since there is no (easy) way to compare the two yet (at least for the general public). Not to mention there's no guarantee ANY title coming out in HDR10 (UHD requirement) will EVER be remastered (unless Dolby pays them to do it). |

HDR10 is the standard on Blu-ray. It will never be replaced because it is required on every UHD BD that has HDR. Forever (at least until the format is dead ![]() Dolby Vision is only better than HDR10 when one of two conditions occur: 1) The display capability is less than the mastered content. For example, if a TV has a lower peak brightness, bit depth, color gamut, than the encoded data on the disc, then the dynamic metadata will scale the content down the the level of the display (making it more accurate then HDR10). 2) The Dolby Vision metadata is mastered at a higher level than HDR10 AND you have a display that is capable of handling HDR at a higher level than HDR10. The main difference in capacity between DV and HDR10 is that DV can be mastered at up to 12 bits and HDR10 10 bits. There won't be 12 bit displays for a few years at least. According to SpectraCal, the closer that the display capability is to the master display, the more HDR10 and Dolby Vision look the same. In other words, you'll see little if any difference on high end displays. The main difference between DV and HDR10, besides one being static and the other dynamic, is that HDR10 is open source and DV is a closed ecosystem (like Apple for example). Actually HDR10 came from Dolby so they will look alike when the conditions above occur. DV, being a closed system where they have more control over the TV settings, will be better calibrated as well.
