Don't

There is no need to use a lens cleaner in anything. All those things do is damage your player

Then what do you use to get the dist out? I live off a dirt road and I have to clean over other day from the dust. And right now, all my movies I have been watching new and used are haveing the image break up and repeat itself. It wasnt doing that a week ago, so I was just wondering.

There's an error on the pressing master that causes a few small fast glitches

Any chance of just getting windows and doors?

Couldn't tell you other than those lens cleaner discs do nothing. Better filtration on your heating and cooling system may help the issue

I have never found a single problem with an optical device caused by a dirty laser, unless some idiot opened up a top loader and put his thumb on the lens

You need to take it to a repair shop

Get a high quality air purifier for whatever room you have your BD player in. A squeeze of compressed air (lightly) might help knock some dust off the lens of the player. Be careful though.

Ok HA HA everyone has a good laugh. But This is really getting to me. I had a PS3 and after 6 months the laser went out. And now I just got a Sharp BD player and now within 3 months its starting to act up. And when you live in the mounatins and off a dirt road and a dry creek bed and its windyall the time, its very hard to keep everything clean, and when you pay alot of money for this stuff and its breaks down after so many months, well it p****es me off to no end.

While we all feel for you, perhaps a thread in another section would have been more appropriate than in an insiders thread. Hope you can work out the problems.

Hi Jeff,

Have the BD disc specifications been announced for True Blood releasing soon on Blu-ray? Do you think HBO will release True-Blood with lossless Audio?

Thanks

Jeff,

Is there ANY chance that Galaxy Quest could come to bluray one of these days?

Has it been talked about?

To this day, this is one of the best satires I have ever seen.

Unfortunately, there aren't very many good solutions, other than filtering the air, or professional cleaning. The dirt/dust on the lens is out of focus, so it would normally take considerable contamination for there to be a problem. As Jeff stated, normally the problem is finger prints because the area of coverage is large, and an irregular oil film causes much more problems than a few spots of scatter, or obscuration, from dust. However, blu-ray uses a very high NA (Numeric Aperture, or high angle) lens, so it would be more prone to problems from high volume contaminates (non-flat). Dirt is pretty heavy, so this is usually less of a contamination problem for home devices than non silica based dust, but I don't know your environment.

If your blu-ray device is still functional, I wouldn't do any cleaning of a preventative nature. I would just do all I could to prevent dust/dirt from getting into it. If the device stops working, I would recommend taking it to a professional cleaner. If this is too costly, or the problem is too regular, and the device isn't working and out of warranty anyway, you can get some optical cleaning supplies on-line. I should note that this isn't as simple as inserting a cleaning disc. You will have to have some skills at disassembling the drive to actually reach the objective lens (hopefully the problem isn't with the laser collimation section). First I would try air cleaning. If this doesn't work, I would only recommend cleaning with approved optical cleaning swaps and mild optical cleaning fluids. A normal technique is touching the swap straight to the lens (lens already covered with cleaning fluid) with no motion to let it pull in the dirt (good ones are designed to wick the particles along with the fluid). This might be enough, but if you need any motion for dust (not silica-based dirt), you can move the swab in a simple line, with no pressure. Do not use circles. True dirt will actually leave scratches of much larger area than the original particle, so I would avoid any scrubbing.

If you are serious about cleaning the lens, and need more information about appropriate products, contact me by PM. This information will not be useful to 99% of owners, as I only recommend this as a last resort for extreme environments.

I would say that getting a dedicated player may be the best solution, because they have an exhaust fan and that's it. The PS3 moves a ton of air through it both in and out and will compound your problem greatly. Dedicated players also use about 25% of the electricity and make virtually no noise, so it's win-win.

Galaxy Quest I'm sure is closer to the top than not

Along with a good surge suppressor. Mountain locations are
known for electrical inconsistencies. Non-the-less I'd have
a professional repair shop take a look. Less than the cost
of a new player and numereous best guess trials over the
Internet.

Nothing helps cigarette smoke or greasy cooking.

Tie it in with the new Star Trek film.

Plus, I hope they restore the original 1.85 ratio of the opening 20 min or so, so when the bay doors of the Protector open it reveals the 2.35 ratio as it was theatrically.

Enchanted and Brother Bear were windowboxed in this manner.
