I figured the mine train sequence from the "Temple of Zoom" to be a stop-motion affair, but I didn't know ILM used Nikon still cameras to photograph it. But it makes sense judging from that photo. A still camera is a lot smaller than a motion picture film camera. Must have been a real pain to keep track of all the rolls of film and make sure they all were developed properly and with the same level of consistency.

Digital still cameras have been used in making movies. Corpse Bride was shot entirely using digital still cameras. I'm not sure if the "bullet time" sequences in The Matrix used film or digital still cameras. Nevertheless a long string of synchronized still cameras ran from point A to B with film cameras running at both ends of the shot move.

Lately digital still cameras have been acting more and more like video cameras, with Canon's EOS 5D Mark II model being a big factor in raising the stakes. It shoots true 1080p HD AVC encoded video while most HD video cameras available to consumers are unable to shoot 1080p (they're typically limited to 1080i or 720p modes). It's a shame the 5D's 1080p HD operation is limited and doesn't allow for full manual control. It would make use of L-series lenses with giant size apertures so much better.

OK guys, I am offline until Monday for the most part. Those attending Otakon can stop by and say hi at events for musical artists Becca and Namoi Tamura, who wil be doing signings and autographs throughout the weekend, with concerts on Sunday. Sorry, I can't interact outside of that, as they require my full attention.

They didn't use the Nikon as a still camera.

They hollowed it out and turned it into a miniature VistaVision camera (it used motion picture film) and shot the sequence go-motion.

No. The "bullet time" sequences on The Matrix were shot with 35mm film cameras, specifically Canon EOS A2 (aka Canon EOS 5).

Too bad about the script, though.

Default Star Wars Clone Wars BD

Hi Jeff/Bill,

Is there any way that Warner would not include lossless audio with this package? WB has been doing such a good job lately with their releases and pricing that it would be a huge mistake for them to not include lossless audio with this release. It would mean the difference from a day one purchase to a skip it all together in my book.

Yet another DVD of Chinatown?!

How many times can they release it on DVD without a BD counterpart?

Since you guys at the Bits have the BSG Blu-ray set in hand, could you take a few pictures of it opened up to show us what it's really like? I'm really curious about the actual disc holders in particular - the review made them sound very peculiar, but didn't offer enough description for me to form a mental image of them.

Criterion is following Disney's lead by raising prices. Their October titles all have a nice $49.99 list price. Why are studios raising prices? How does this get more people to adopt the format?

Which studio is next?

Indeed. I stopped buying filmed content on DVD a couple years ago now.

I said no to the last Chinatown disc at $6, even though I know it's much better than my current disc and the movie is on my all-time top 20 list. Not another cent, until it's HD.

I'm curious - does Eric Linderman lurk this site?
He did the sound design for all of the Matrix films.

Hey Jeff,

Can we expect any cool new announcements at comic-con?

Its not bluray related, but Im hoping Lucasarts announces that classics like Dark Forces, Full Throttle and Jedi Knight are getting HD upgrades. Lucasarts has mentioned that they do have something up their sleaves for comic con. That would just be awesome if that were it.

Default Infraction Alert.....infraction Alert

Jeff - Please note that I am NOT asking when any of these titles are being released and I know that whenever a studio announces a release date it appears at THE BITS, this site and others. Also, I am not asking about any of the titles (or presumed "sets" like Indy Jones, Alien series or Spielberg films) that everybody seems anxious for. However, in all the reading I've done at various Blu sites, I don't recall ever seeing these titles mentioned. So, I'm not asking about dates, but rather if you have heard anything about a Blu future for them, such as that they are currently being considered, undergoing restoration etc. Six titles, two of which are black and white:

WITCHES OF EASTWICK
GHOST AND THE DARKNESS
TOPKAPI
CABARET
THE TRAIN
SINK THE BISMARCK

Thanks
