Why don't you wait until it's out of theaters first. Before the end of the year

I already spent more than its total running time watching the trailer in theaters for 3 months before it came out, so I feel like I've already seen it

Default Fantasia Blu-ray transfer question

Jeff or Bill,

Have you heard anything about Disney doing a full blown frame by frame restoration for their Fantasia Blu-ray next March similar in quality to what they have done for Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty? I thought those two transfers were awesome I am hoping they will not simply use the sd-dvd transfer from 2000. Please let me know. I wrote Bob Chapek of WDSHE a snail letter earlier this year but have not heard anything.

Many Thanks,
Eric

Expect all the Disney Blus to get similar treatment. Personallly I wish they'd back off a bit on the processing, they look amazing, but something feels just slightly off

Thanks Jeff for the reply. The colors on Pinocchio and greater detail really blew me away, but I get what you mean about the processing.

An IMAX camera shoots a 15-perf 65mm image with the film drawn horizontally through the camera.

70mm is for release prints. The extra width on 70mm film was reserved for magnetic audio tracks, 6 channels worth. The mag striping process has all but died off due to high cost and environmental regulations. Just about any new 70mm print, be it a 5/70, 8/70 or 15/70 print will be time coded for use with DTS or one of the IMAX-based audio systems.

One IMAX frame is equal to 3 traditional 5-perf 70mm theatrical film frames. One 5-perf 70mm film frame is 250% larger than a 4-perf 35mm film frame.
Thanks for the info. I think I have a better idea with most of the above now.

Hey Jeff seeing as there is a nightmare on elm street remake coming next year I'm sure Warner is likely to release the Original nightmare films alongside it. What I'm wondering is if we will ever see those extended versions that were only released on laserdisc (and I think vhs) ever?

Jeff/Bill, should no mention (yet) of a director's/extended cut (which you've strongly hinted at) be a worry??

Default The seven year itch

Hi Jeff

Last year Fox announced the blu-ray release of "The seven year itch" for this year's April, and it didn't happen.

Any chance Fox will release Marylin Monroe movies in 2010? Maybe 2011?

I seem to remember it was a big deal when they were released on dvd around the year 2000, I think. Is the delay due to the fact that not enough people that would buy those movies are yet buying blu-rays?

I think all of them had "Restoration comparison"-s or whatever they were called. Is the delay maybe because they need to be restored again for high-def? As this seems to be the trend in Warner.

Thanks

Tombstone is being worked on, but no solid date

Elm Street maybe. It's just a bit of extra blood, and I don't think NL released those, it was a sublicense

So, I can think of IMAX as the 65mm version of Vistavision?

Yeah, that would be a decent way of looking at it. IMAX is a little more of a size jump than VistaVision.

One "lazy 8" 8-perf 35mm VistaVision frame is equal to two standard 35mm film frames. Whereas IMAX is equal to three standard 70mm film frames.

It's kind of funny 35mm still cameras effectively shoot still frames in VistaVision. It's 8-perf 35mm and drawn horizontally through the camera.

hence, this from the Mine Sequence in Temple of Doom:

I found the image via this amazingly nerdy post, and he got the photo from here

You can no doubt tell the story better than I of the pre-ILM rescue of 1920-1940s cameras to shoot opticals for ANH, digging out from pawn shops Vistavision equipment and optical printers that had been dormant for decades...

Dont be sooo sure. The most recent dvd release was pretty terrible with tons of edge enhancement and it even had THX certification.
