Don't mistake the mix for the codec.

Run Hoosiers, RoboCop, The Fly, etc and then run something like Enchanted, Spider-Man, or Twister.

It's the mix!

Guys, if you want to debate TrueHD vs DTS and mix vs codec, this is hardly the place.

Sorry to go off-topic. I agree that everything boils down to sound mixing.

For example the 24-bit DTS ES track on Face/Off puts some of the lossless audio mixes to shame. I am surprised that Martin Liebman gave only 4/5 just because the mix wasn't lossless.

The PCM track on the BVHE disc whups it. It's far more "open" sounding

It is fixed by FW updates in the guilty processors/receivers.

Peter just has a deep hatred for DTS, so for him, the more blame on DTS the better.

Oh, and since Uni chose DTS HDMA, it takes a little more from his claim that DTS will go the way of the dodo.

Peter just has little patience for people who worship a codec and give it credit where none is deserved. You're hearing mixes, plain and simple, and if we put you in a level matched double blind test of the exact same clip from the same master through DTSMA, PCM and THD you would not be able to tell me which one was the THD with any kind of consistancy required for even a verification of your subjective opinion. Do you really think that Dolby would advertise their codec as "lossless", if it wasn't? That's a pile of lawsuits waiting to happen

I'm locking the thread until Bill comes back

Hey Guys,

My apologies for being gone so long (what, like TWO months - sheesh). There's no good reason for it, other than the usual: I'm just crazy, silly busy... almost every day.

BUT... I'm back, and I'm going to TRY to drop in more often. So feel free to chat and ask away, and I'll respond as best I can.

Can you comment on what has been going on with Warner's press releases? Are the press releases incorrect or is Warner reacting to pressure from yourself and other enthusiasts who want HD audio?

Bill,

I really enjoyed hearing the news you posted today about 'Blow' having Dolby TrueHD. In regards to the future blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight' could you pass this along to the suits at Warners, "DON'T MUFF IT UP!"

Thanks,
TauHeel05

The press releases have been incorrect. On the catalog side at least, it's simply a case of the left hand and the right hand maybe not coordinating so well. Warner actually DID react positively to the requests/demands of enthusiasts earlier this year, when they announced their intention to deliver lossless audio on all catalog titles, etc. They are paying attention and they do intended to deliver the best quality they can. I'm still waiting for more on the new release side of things, but mostly this seems to have been the result of misinformation/confusion on press releases and the studio press site.

I think it's safe to say, NOBODY at the studio wants to drop the ball on that one...

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure that they weren't encoding these for BD-25 and then slapping on another audio track due to consumer pressure.

Bill what are the chances we will see the first three Indiana Jones movies on Blu-ray? Can you handicap it? What about Indy IV -- care to handicap that one?
