Well, that's perhaps the least common denominator of a thing on planet Earth, but it's not the least common denominator of movies that can open on 4,000 screens. You do need to be able to interpret, say, that you're seeing representations of humans up on that screen, right?

I think 99% of people can interpret those 2 things. There are 2 big differences between films that make you think or cause you to think about what's going on and films that suffer from a weak plot or not plot at all and bad dialogue and these four films don't suffer from those. That's why they aren't the lowest common denominator. |

They're really just Oscar fodder that appeals to the masses. They're either all about pulling the heart-strings (Titanic & Gump) or championing machismo (Gladiator & Braveheart). Two different types of lowest-common-denominator, but lowest-common-denominator nonetheless. |

I disagree. Lowest common denominator would be a comedy where everyone gets the jokes and little brain power is used.

How much brain power is used to watch, and fully understand, those 4? An 8 year old could comprehend every aspect of each one of those. They are basic as basic could be, and require no effort from the viewer. If they were difficult for you....well...no comment.

Sure am tired of reading posts from people that always rip blockbuster titles--seems almost like if the "stupid masses" like a film then it can't
be any good...sigh. anyhoo-- I think that all 4 films listed here are GREAT movies and for the record-- I love emotional films-- which all 4 of these films are... manipulative? Of course! Isn't that what a lot of filmmaking is about? The director films scenes to create reactions-- fear, sad, happy, etc. If the movie accomplishes this then it works-- there certaintly have been plenty of movies that fail miserably in these catagories.. |
