Hi Jeff,

Does anyone know if Warner Home Video is planning on releasing a Pittsburgh Penguins 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Champions Special Edition DVD or Blu-Ray set?

The past two years, when Detroit and Anaheim won the Cup, they released special editions which contained all the Stanley Cup Final games in their entirety.

I expected the Penguins S.E. to be out by the start of the season if Warner followed the same release pattern they established the past two years. But so far nothing, not even an announcement. The only thing they released was the standard highlight DVD, which they also did for Detroit and Anaheim before releasing the Special Editions.

This is kind of surprising since Sidney Crosby is one of the highest profile NHL players, and the Penguins are considered to be the fastest growing brand in the NHL. (Forbes Magazine 5/11/09 - The Pittsburgh Penguins have the fastest-growing team brand in the National Hockey League and one of the fastest-growing team brands in all of professional sports, according to a Forbes Magazine analysis published this month.)

Could the delay or lack of an announcement be due to an impending Blu-Ray release of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Can you point me in the right direction as to whom to contact at Warners?

Thanks

Just customer service, you're probably better off contacting the team. WB is a giant bureaucaracy, even more so than most movie studios, and by the time I tracked down whoever is responsible in the middle of Christmas it'd be time for the NEXT Stanley cup disc.

You're welcome.
Agreed, also hope that the quadrilogy set will be released with no unnecessary "doctoring" to the images.

Aside from a few errors that were acknowleged, Fox hardly has a history of artifical sharpening or DNR.

That sounds great!
I've got the impression that the studio's have gotten better at releasing films with no artificial sharpening or DNR and such?

I have a question and I wasn't sure where to post it. This seemed like the best bet. I've just started collecting blu-rays and the two that I have recently purchased are having audio issues. I don't have a receiver (using my Sony Bravia KDL40 TV speakers and two SA-VA15 speakers plugged directly into the TV) and am watching blu-rays through my PS3.

I haven't had any problems watching either movie, but when I try to watch the special features there is no audio. I can get audio for the specific title by opening up the audio settings and switching from linear pcm to bitstream (and then back again) but it's a huge hassle to have to do this whenever I want to watch anything on the BD that isn't the movie.

Has anyone seen/heard of this problem before or having any insight about internal settings, etc. that could be changed to eliminate the hassle?

Thanks.

Default Moulin Rouge

There was an news story on Blu-ray.com about Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet coming to France next March. I wanted to comment but had to re-register. By the time I got back to the first page the article was gone. Is there any news or was this bogus?

Moulin Rougue is coming yes

As for the audio issue, you should call sony, and make sure you tell them what titles are giving you trouble

Jeff, I'm sure you've noticed the "price wars" between Amazon and Walmart.com. Did you expect this? I knew we'd get some good deals for Q4, but I certainly didn't think we'd be seeing 2 big retailers literally pricematching each other on a daily basis. It's a very amusing thing to see. And a wise move since BD needs a big Q4 to continue the momentum in a very important year 4 of the format.

I did not anticipate we'd be seeing titles like Harry Potter 6 down to $16.99. I thought $19.99 for anything would have been as low as it would get.

Even Best Buy.com is getting into the pricematching. They had their big 30% off sale last week, but they are now lowering prices on certain future titles. And in store, they had Taking of Pelham 123 for $19.99, with the ad stating $24.99. I guess they made a late decision to drop it further after the ads were printed.

Just curious to get your feedback on all of these deals.

Jeff,

Thanks for the further Alien update on the bits! It's very nice to have some reassurance that "2010", vague though that is, is still the present plan for those.

Did I expect a pricewar? No. Am I suprised? No

Amazon sees a golden opportunity in this economy to grab a whole bunch of people to shop with them, so they're taking a loss on a bunch of DVDs to draw attention and traffic. Probably not as bad of a hit as Wal-Mart is taking though, with their higher overhead.

I think they also see it as an investment in the future. Low disc prices on hot movies help move players, and get new PS3 owners, of which there will probably be quite a few this year in the habit of buying them

Im very greatful, but the funny thing is that I always end up with a lot of extra promotional credit at the end of the month, because I get paid at the beginning of every month and I place my preorders and I just purchase giftcards and use that money to apply to the order so that way i can have it all paid for!

I called them and talked to them for about 40 minutes and they ended up saying "well at least you can get it to work. sorry you have to jump through hoops."

I tried a few things and it seemed to strengthen my belief that no hardware is "damaged" per se and that it will likely work fine if I invest in a receiver.

Thanks for the replies/suggestions.

Telling us what the titles are that are giving you trouble would help

B13, i'm unfamiliar with the film, but it looks like Magnolia owns it, so a BLu-ray release would depend on how well the DVD did. I'd look for a region free Canal disc as most likely in Europe before anyone else

The only three that I have so far to try are The Searchers, A Clockwork Orange and Silence of the Lambs.
