I can definitely respect that opinion. I am not actually advocating that everyone A/B all of their gear, I don't. More that they be aware of the issues and keep it in mind when comparing gear and when making strong definitive statements based on nothing but comparisons with long gaps between tests.

I don't want to be bound by tests and figures when introducing a new component (amp, source, cable, etc.) into my system at home. My interest in this hobby, as it has been for the past 40+ years, is about the emotion the music gives me. I don't want to be bogged down by numbers and tests. Once I give in to looking at that.....my system has taken over and the music is now secondary.

Does that make sense to you?

Default HDMI cable

If I use the latest HDMI cable Vs.1.3a from my Blu-ray (hdmi 1.3) which has onboard decoding for True HD, to my Receiver (HDMI vs. 1.2) will the Blu-ray pass all the lossless compressed digital audio formats to the Receiver?

Yes, if the player is decoding it will pass it as a multichannel PCM signal.

You can have a 14 bit panel, but it will be limited by the source. Which in this case, Blu-ray is 8 bit. So you will only be displaying 8 bit on your 14 bit panel.

No one is saying the build of the TV doesn't make a difference? Of course a Kuro is better than a Memorex?

Your argument was that since your panel can handle 14 bit deep color (as many do), then you should be using overpriced Monster cables that claim to be able to pass 16 bit color versus other inexpensive cables that can only pass up to 8 bit. You also claimed you saw the advantage of this.

As there are no sources of deep color (>8 bit) currently out there, then your argument has no basis. You do not need a cable capable of passing anything higher than 8 bit, because that's all there is to pass. Even though your panel canhandle more, there is NO more to give it, therefore there is NO more to see with a Monster cable.

Say you need to drain your pool. Your drain can handle 16 gallons per minute, so you want to get a hose capable of passing 16 gpm of water to it. But Your pump can only physically move 8 gpm. Are you going to drain the water any faster with a hose that can handle 16 gpm? The answer is no.

Thanks. So it makes sense to utilize a 1.3 HDMI cable rather than 1.2 to capture all the digital formats? Sorry for the multiple questions.

Not sure when the last time I saw non-1.3 cables out there. Just pick up a couple from Monoprice or BJC and you'll be set for some time to come.

I use a M Series Monster HDMI 4 ft to run from my PS3 to my Sony XBR9. I havent noticed any issues with it. Ive been having issues with a HDMI cable that a friend of mine who works for a cable tv company gave me. Dont know the brand, its just a black cable. I use to run off a Toshiba HD DVD player. Ever since i hooked it up to the XBR9, the video drops out sometimes, the sound drops out sometimes, and other times there is just nothing.

Was doing some reading over at the HDMI site tonight and everything we think we know about versions is being thrown out the window.
http://www.hdmi.org/index.aspx
They have one year to change on cables and abit longer on electronics but they have to put what they mean with the version.

http://www.hdmi.org/download/guideli...es_FINAL_a.pdf

That is the new guidelines all 38 pages.

Don't sweat it. They added various features to the HDMI v1.3 standard. Any Category 2 HDMI cable will work with the v1.3 a/b/c standard.

Default HDMI Cables.

I just learned a valuable lesson the other day and that is never buy just any old HDMI cable. I bought an HDMI cable from Wallymart the other day for my cable box. I saw one at a cheap price so I bought it. Well I hooked it up to my cable box and ran it to my tv. At first everything worked fine but then I started switching channels and what do I see? Channels being split in half or the channel looking as though its being crushed into a small box that takes up the top part of my screen. The only way to get to work? Turn the cable box off. But it kept on doing it and no matter what I did it kept right on doing the same thing! No it wasnt the cable box or my tv because when I connected the cable coaxial cords it worked fine with no trouble at all. I took the HDMI cords back and the guy told me at the customer service counter that I should never have used those cables because they are cheap. God did I fell like an idiot! But at the time I thought what the heck? They are cheap and since cable only goes to 1080i why pay for expensive HDMI cable? Well lesson learned. I dont care what I have to pay for an HDMI cable anymore because at least I will get quality and it will do what its supposed to do. So next time I will go directly to RocketFish cables or Montster Cables or even go with Sonys own HDMI cables because then at least I know I will get an HDMI cable that works! That being said does anyone have any advise on what kind of HDMI cable to buy for HD cable? I know I listed the ones I want to buy but if anyone else has any advise please let me know.

you havent ruled out that the hdmi port could be damaged. just because another cable type worked doesnt mean that a $10,000 hdmi cable will. if you thought it was the hdmi cable you bought, you should have tested it on another source such as a blu ray player to really rule out the cable box and to rule out the hdmi input of the tv, use another hdmi input. all possibilities should be explored before coming to a conclusion on what the problem is

This is 100% wrong. Granted, you may have gotten a faulty cable that happened to be cheap, but that doesn't mean the cable didn't work because it was cheap. For good, cheap cables buy from monoprice.com. I (and countless others on this forum) are using their cheap cables with absolutely no problems whatsoever. There's also been plenty of testing done by reputable sources that back up the idea that cheap cables can and do work just as well as expensive ones.

considering the fact your cable box is only outputting at 720p/1080i...you just happened to get a bum cable because even category 1 hdmi cables will handle 720p/1080i.

I would definitely not waste your money on paying more for cables.

Monoprice.com or Bluejeanscable.com

good advice to live by.
