LOL That is a good deal especially considering they really are getting harder and harder to get now except for a lot of display models and open boxes . Even without the availability problem your Dad still got a great deal

The store shouldn't make money by misleading their customers.. I found the Specs page for all the non Maganolia HDMI cables..They just moved it..Dynex..Insignia..Rocketfish..Monster.. They each listed pro's & cons.. They listed the Dynex/Insignia as being 'slow' & only 60herts support..etc.. I bought a Audioquest HDMI cable at my store.. only 11.00.. I use the oppo HDMI cable for my PS3.. I didn't do a direct comparison, but the audio quest didn't jump out as being better.. Nor would I have paid the 40.00 they charged for it.. & salesman joke about how much their customer spent on cables.. Some call them idiots.. I read one receipt, & one poor customer paid 240 in cables.. I just shook my head in disgust. People really need to stop being slaves to electronic retail stores.. If I was a saleman I'd tell them to go to monoprice..

When I was working in electronics at Target and a guest was asking me about HDMI cables, I'd usually refer them to monoprice ... only if they weren't an ass though.

Depends on how far you are from meeting your quota.

Default Why You Should Never Pay More Than $10 For HDMI Cables

found this amusing summary on why you should never pay more than $10 for HDMI cables, and figured I'd pass it on.

Nice. Hopefully the mass public is learning about marketing hype regarding cables. Its a shame that people waste so much money on b.s. when they could be upgrading something that actually matters.

Its insulting that companies like Monster and Best Buy push products like this.

Some might argue that taking advantage of ignorant consumers isn't a crime.

Best Buy's business models survival relies on that principal. The margin on accessories is insane while the margin on displays, blu-ray players, etc is is fairly tight (granted best still charges more for displays than places like Fry's )

Locally we sell tons of HDMI cables, the cost from vendor is insanely low, even at 10 bucks on 3,6,10ft cables your making a minimum of 60% margin on.

Best buy in our area is to the point if people complain about their cable prices they send them to us.

The way of the big box stores has always been to rape on accessories and cables. Its an easy sell and a quick way to make up low margin on components and tvs. Especially after sony removed all its direct dealers and moved to a distributed warehouse system putting a middle man in the way of all resellers.

We have people all the time fight us on a $80 HDMI cable vs $10 bucks, I try my best to educate them but usually they are not worth the effort as our sales are really more to contractors and installers vs walk ins.

I think I may print a hundred of them and pass them out to people in the Best Buy parking lot.

I work for Best Buy Magnolia, and I still refuse to pimp "Special HDMI" cables.
I only recommend AudioQuest's Forest Series. They are the same prices as our "cheap" Dynex cables, but at least they are higher quality, and in-wall rated, with a 13gbps. It's cheap for a high-end (Magnolia) retailer...$30-40 for 3-6 feet cables and they come in nice packaging.... I also tell customers that cables are available outside the store if they are out of their price range.
Recommending Monoprice.com for online purchases.
At the store where I work I think a lot of people that buy the more expensive cables at Best Buy are just trying to do one stop shopping, and are willing to sacrifice price for convenience. But I still try and educate them to the differences. We even went over the difference in a store meeting yesterday with management. Most of the store associates and managers didn't know that there wasn't a difference between high end Monster cabling and the cheap Dynex as far as PQ & SQ goes. Once my manager became aware he said, "obviously we always want to make margin, but let's not mislead customers with false information...just present them with the facts about the cables, and let them make an informed decision about the cables. Don't force a high priced cable down someone's throat. We do want our customers to come back, after all. There is margin to be found elsewhere besides the HDMI cable. Find things that they really do need to spend money on, Surge protection and Blu-ray players and movies to play on them." I love my manager.
