For professional use, which is the essence of *the critical look*, LG’s implementation of OLED (adding white pixels to the RGB structure) “has its own advantages and its own significant challenges”.

Geoff, due to me having to put on my sprinkler-system-repair-man hat because of an emergent problem in the front yard , we’ve only gotten thru the 1st half of the Newcastle v. Arsenal match, so I won’t read your spoiler (thanks ) quite yet.

However, note to PeterTHX the later part of the first half action, which we have watched, had our heads spinning….

b.t.w., as a tie-in, for serious calibrators out there, yesterday yielded some Press News from Light Illusion which will be showing its new color (colour) product at the FSI booth at NAB 2015… http://www.lightillusion.com/zippdf/...ematics%20.pdf

Update to the HDMI specification required for HDR say's Phillips : http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/hdmi-...1503184030.htm

Using the term “HDMI 2.0a” to describe the yet-to-be-released spec, Tack explained that a new HDMI version is necessary for the detection of HDR metadata flags that’s embedded in the video stream, allowing for proper display of HDR-treated material. As long as the display is HDR-capable, he said that the upgrade can be done by a software/ firmware update rather than a hardware overhaul.

If manufacturers don't supply this necessary firmware update and expect people to buy all new sets and receivers/pre-amps for HDR support on the HDMI chipsets... they're bloody fools.

I do agree but at the same time we all know that all the specs are still being worked on. It is foolish to buy a Ultra HD TV until the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc is at least on the market.

it's only foolish if you're upgrading just for the sake of upgrading. But if you have to buy a new tv now anyways it's foolish to buy a 1080p tv that is GUARANTEED not to work with Ultra HD Blu-ray.

I like your away colors (I think it's CP?) as they remind me a little of Brasil's National team colors.
Next up….for tonight’s or tomorrow’s entertainment be the ManU v. Liverpool match.

Not that I'm debating I'm just curious as to how it is a plus? Will you be there? Is there any way to get a idea as to what happened?

I hope so but I honestly think it will be a mute point come launch as we will have a new HDMI specification by then.

HDMI 2.0 added support for higher bandwidth, Rec. 2020 color space, multiple audio streams, and several other features. One thing that HDMI 2.0 didn't add was HDR support and they added that on recently using CEA info packets. In theory that should work but to make sure that it is automatic, consistent, and seamless I expect a HDMI specific solution for HDR will be added to the next version of HDMI.

The LG OLED TVs use a white OLED backlight with color filters in a RGBW pattern which helps with cost and lifespan but it reduces color gamut and makes the color balance more complicated.

It relates to my general low opinion of the press that covers the technological aspect of video, e.g. - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post10439986

I’ll add….to the point where I’d say that the professional color grading community believes the color saturation nonlinearity with what they’ve offered, remains a significant problem to this day.

I think it is possible but HDR was added to HDMI as though it was a minor update so I do wonder how perfectly it will work when the vast majority of HDMI 2.0 products coming out this year weren't made to support it (AV receivers, video processors, HDMI switches, etc...). I think the BDA wants to release Ultra HD Blu-ray players this year and they are trying to get everything ready for it.
