Using the term “HDMI 2.0a” to describe the yet-to-be-released spec, Tack explained that a new HDMI version is necessary for the detection of HDR metadata flags that’s embedded in the video stream, allowing for proper display of HDR-treated material. As long as the display is HDR-capable, he said that the upgrade can be done by a software/ firmware update rather than a hardware overhaul.

If manufacturers don't supply this necessary firmware update and expect people to buy all new sets and receivers/pre-amps for HDR support on the HDMI chipsets... they're bloody fools.

I do agree but at the same time we all know that all the specs are still being worked on. It is foolish to buy a Ultra HD TV until the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc is at least on the market.

it's only foolish if you're upgrading just for the sake of upgrading. But if you have to buy a new tv now anyways it's foolish to buy a 1080p tv that is GUARANTEED not to work with Ultra HD Blu-ray.

HDMI 2.0 added support for higher bandwidth, Rec. 2020 color space, multiple audio streams, and several other features. One thing that HDMI 2.0 didn't add was HDR support and they added that on recently using CEA info packets. In theory that should work but to make sure that it is automatic, consistent, and seamless I expect a HDMI specific solution for HDR will be added to the next version of HDMI.

The LG OLED TVs use a white OLED backlight with color filters in a RGBW pattern which helps with cost and lifespan but it reduces color gamut and makes the color balance more complicated.

I’ll add….to the point where I’d say that the professional color grading community believes the color saturation nonlinearity with what they’ve offered, remains a significant problem to this day.

I think it is possible but HDR was added to HDMI as though it was a minor update so I do wonder how perfectly it will work when the vast majority of HDMI 2.0 products coming out this year weren't made to support it (AV receivers, video processors, HDMI switches, etc...). I think the BDA wants to release Ultra HD Blu-ray players this year and they are trying to get everything ready for it.

how big an impact with HDR make on most current tvs though? Other than OLEDs with they even ever support it?
