Just came back from the 6pm EST showing. Quick reaction: Holy cow you guys are going to go to town on this one if the theatrical experience replicates what we're going to get with the home release. I'm not someone who's all that sensitive to artifacting (i.e. I'm not a pixel peeper), and even I noticed the plainly obviously (compression?) artifacts at the top of the frame of the tidal wave sequence. I'm sure everybody in the audience noticed it. There also seemed to be frozen artifacts within the lettering of the main end credits sequence. Some of Mary Elizabeth's close-ups looked pretty smooth to me, but I'd have to go back to my DVD copy and compare. I'm positive this has had the usual Cameron processing applied to it. It's been about eight years since I last watched the film on DVD, so hard for me to compare the color timings. I will be verrry curious to read you guys' reaction to this. BTW, "20th Century Fox" logo at the head of the film.

On DVD I remember this film being quite dark and murky, which it is, but because of the format limitations that meant it wasn’t just atmospheric and spooky, but outright hard to see. For those reasons this 4K remaster is quite the revelation. You really get to see new details within the ships and shadows. So it's very nice. Though I did notice some VFX shots at the end which were quite blurry. One wide shot in particular, when the alien ship emerges from out the water, looked like the projector malfunctioned.
Overall a great theatrical experience however. Crowd even clapped. Got a free poster walking out. The back advertised all of James Cameron's upcoming 4Ks. ![]() Last edited by Danespina; 12-07-2023 at 01:55 AM. |

Overall, I was pleased with the presentation. Not perfect, but very watchable (it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve seen this). The sound was great. As others have mentioned, what the hell happened to some of those VFX shots near the end? In particular, that one overhead shot above water is REALLY awful.

Saw the remastered Abyss SE in AVX at my local Cineplex this evening, yep some of the effects shots were lacking (e.g. the beach scene with the tsunami in the background, or the model ships perched on the surfaced 'nti ship') but overall it looked and sounded pretty good.

To my nominally amateurish eyes, it's another Cameron-o-vision joint, but considering the last time I saw it was likely VHS, I was happy to see it look as good as it does. One instance that looked ultra sharp was a shot of Michael Biehn's hand (not shaking), and the Special Edition stuff on land looked rather dupey, but the stuff with Bud below looked great. As a few others have said, the Atmos mix is fun.
As an experience, it's the one Jimbo movie from the 20th century I don't know by heart (Piranha 2 notwithstanding), so it was easy to get caught back up in how ambitious and weird a blockbuster it is. Some of the scenes in the depths still make me feel claustrophobic, and I can see why many in the cast had a tough time on set. It's also nice to see Cameron controlling action before he went balls out on T2 and never looked back. Last edited by Yearbook; 12-07-2023 at 02:20 AM. |

In my mind's eye I had an idea of what the "best" this could possibly look like could be - this matched it.
The wave effect was always lousy and unless it was totally redone - which wasn't possibly going to happen - it wasn't going to get better with a remaster. The denouement wasn't ever the point of the story for me anyway. So count me as one that will be happy to have this on 4k disc. |

Saw it in Dolby as well. Not as bad as I feared, but plenty of shots looked too soft with mushy grain and sometimes faces looked too smooth. And yet it often looked awesome. As far as vfx go, the tidal wave stuff looked pretty rough and was very filtered. The super wide aerial shot at the end looked like it was upscaled from a low quality video source.

Well for what it's worth, James Cameron gave a special message before the film started, introducing the new presentation, and making reference to the Dolby Atmos track.
