I'm not even sure if the movie can be recomposited, because while yes the CGI was finished on a program by ILM, we likely can't even open up the original files from 1989 (and 1993 for the special edition scenes) with our current technology, let alone edit them. (and that's even if they still existed) Even a lot of early 2000's 2K DI's being retransferred to 4K have been using filmouts because today's technology can't read the older DI files properly.

The only way it can be remotely recomposited is if the CGI was completely rebuilt from the ground up and for that they'd have to have the original unaltered production footage for everything, which I highly doubt was saved.

Does anyone know why the preorder isn't up yet for this? It is for Aliens in the UK, which seems odd considering I thought this trilogy of films by Cameron was out on the month and same day?

if they were able to do OCN scanning for the 4k, then they have all the original production footage

They haven't "recomposed" anything, that's just Cameron speak for saying that he supervised the usual aspects (framing, grading etc) for every shot.

The fact they have the original negative wouldn't mean sh-t, the negative itself would have all of the CGI effects printed out on it as well (possibly an internegative cut onto it for those shots), it wouldn't have the raw production footage on it, the original cut negative itself would be conformed to whatever would be released theatrically basically

It's very likely the production trims were thrown out because that was common practice at that time

It was part of "the old fashioned way" of getting 35mm prints prepared

Thanks for clarifying; I posted Cameron's quote about recomposing, and contextually he meant shot composure, ie., reframing, not CG-compositing.
I think "composite" and "compose" are two different words.

Whenever "OCN" is mentioned in this context it refers to the cut conformed picture negative, not all the outs and trims and raw VFX plates from production. That stuff is usually kept these days, yes, but that's not what "OCN" refers to w/ref to new transfers being done.

Going to see this tonight in the Dobly (that’s Geoff-speak for Dolby)!
I’m actually not too familiar with this movie— I streamed an HD version years ago and before that probably watched it once on VHS. Never seen the special edition so this should be fun.

Really excited to see this on the big screen tonight.

On another note... I'm very surprised this is not getting the Steelbook treatment with it's 4K release..

Do screenings like this at AMC usually have previews? I'm wondering how late I can be

Make sure you turn your flashlight on your phone and shine it down all of the aisles to find your seat.
