All he had to do is say he replaced it with CGI. They spent millions to make it look identical in every way…how could anyone prove otherwise?

Would it make any difference ethically since the real rat (which has been dead for years) already suffered? If anything, cutting the scene or simply replacing it CGI makes the rats suffering even more pointless.

They made a stand and laws to make sure this wasn't ok.
If they make exceptions now then why not remale Milo and Ottis with more animal violence.

Could you put a mountain lion in a daycare and say the resulting mayhem is what would have happened if you hadn't arranged for those conditions?

Everyone is quoting Bill Hunt currently for the "reason" why it was canceled. Disney/Cameron hasn't said anything about it from what I could find. I couldn't even locate an actual official announcement that it's been canceled.

I don't understand the fuss, at all. If they'd released the only version it would have been legal to release in the UK, a lot of you would have just bought the foreign version anyway.

All not having a UK release does it mean you don't have a UK version to pass on. I'll be picking up the French version as soon as amazon.fr allows ordering to the UK (release day onwards) and will get more-or-less an identical product to what a UK uncut version could be.

If Cameron doesn't want to acquiesce to a cut version then the responsibility ultimately lies with him. Once upon a time he personally recut True Lies to get a 15 certificate for it, and with today's tech I'm sure they could've zoomed and finagled that scene in The Abuse a lot betterer than they did on the old cut version, but El Cameroon doesn't want to know.
It falls squarely on the UK. Good on Cameron for not compromising his artistic work.

Usually, laws aren't retroactive from the date they go into effect.

But rat really does taste like chicken.

The laws was in effect when this was made, hence the cut.
It was always cut, just like horse trips and any unneeded animal violence.

Bill Hunt, is that the same guy who said these were new 4k masters from new scans and had to backpedal?.
Bill Hunt who has a reputation for saying he knows something for clicks?.
He and a few members here are well known for their practices on other sites.
Thing is, it's the internet and every post lives forever.

I am strongly against any cuts. IF that is the reason and as a result of that, we in the UK do not get a release, so be it.

It's hilarious that it's required to be cut in order to be sold in the UK, but there are no laws making it illegal to import it uncut.

I also feel this way.
Fake violence cuts in a movie make no sense, this was a real animal who didn't have a choice.
They also chose to not tell the AHA that there would be any animals in the film.

Adding a bit of irony, this was done the same month the UK is being sued by a POW for complicity in CIA water boarding. My apologies for the politics up front…can’t help but let the real world in every once in a while.

"Aw, um...maybe we should try and coax it out. What do cats like to eat? Mice and birds and crickets? Mice and birds and crickets, huh. Ahem. Who has been relevant since the Mickey Mouse Club? Oh. (speed dials) Hi, Jiminy. Yeah, it's me. How ya been? Not so good? Yeah, anyway, can you help us out? We need an educator to teach daycare kids, 'I'm No Fool Around Mountain Cats'. Hello? Hello?"

Apple USA has messed up iTunes version of The Abyss for those that purchased 4K Dolby Vision digital release from the store

The Abyss 4K version of the Theatrical Cut has reverted to HD today or yesterday
Was 4K Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos when I previously checked it a few days ago

Both Theatrical Cut and Special Edition playback now is in HD
It's listed as 4K HDR in my library but not when you click play

When I purchased a few weeks ago the Theatrical Cut playback was 4K Dolby Vision it's now changed to HD
Special Edition listed in extras also still is HD that's not changed

Probably less to do with to censorship or artistic integrity (having already been released in other formats in the UK in the past) and more to do with not wanting to pony up the money on creating a separate disc for the UK market instead of a standard Europe-wide disc.

UK Restrictions on importing DVD/Blu-ray/UHD releases from other countries only applies if a Film is banned in UK in regards to Obscene Publications Acts 1959 and 1964, and the Protection of Children Act 1978

The Abyss is not a banned film in UK it just requires to be cut in regards to UK releases
